 One in ten deaths in Sri Lanka are cancer related Merrill J. Fernando, Founder of Dilmah, his family, staff and workers are joining the Sri Lanka Cricketers in reducing this alarming statistic. The Hope Cancer Hospital project is a vision for a 750 bed hospital specialising in Cancer. Treatment will be free to enable the underprivileged, children and adults alike, to benefit from the facility. Facilities simply do not exist in our country today to adequately treat even a fraction of those at risk from cancer, and so they suffer unimaginable pain, and many eventually die for want of treatment. Dilmah will reward the Sri Lankan cricketers by supporting their efforts at achieving their dream for a Hope Cancer Hospital. Every run, every wicket, every run out, every catch and stumping, will earn a certain donation for the project. This is just one of the ways that Dilmah is supporting the Hope project. Dilmah is supporting the Hope Fund by donating a sum of money linked to the on-field performances of our cricketers. A monetary value is attached to each run, wicket, catch, stumping and run out, by a Sri Lankan cricketer.
As an introduction, Dilmah decided to add a “zero” to the above amounts for the duration of the ICC Champions Trophy in September 2002. In effect, this made it Rs 100 per run and Rs 3000 per wicket
