Ground Profile

The Gujarat Cricket Association did a remarkable job in completing the construction of this entirely new stadium in a record time of about nine months. When built, it was reputed to be one of the best new stadiums built in recent years. The Government of Gujarat alloted the Association a piece of land of about 50 acres on the bank of the Sabarmati river, near a place called Motera. Although the foundation stone was laid only on the 31st of August, 1983, by the then President of India, work on the site had been in progress from as early as the 12th of March of that year. The stadium itself was inaugurated on the 12th of November, 1983 with the third test match between India and the West Indies (under Clive Lloyd) - a match that, played on an underprepared track, ended with the West Indies triumphing by 138 runs and was notable for a heroic, career-best bowling performance of 9 for 83 by Kapil Dev. This is the only cricket stadium in India that has fibre glass chairs and fiber coloured benches. A trench around the playing area to stop spectators from invading the ground is another innovation. The Gujarat Cricket Association have plans to increase the capacity to 75,000.
