Jonathan Lewis, the uncapped Gloucestershire fast-medium bowler, has been called up to bolster the England squad for the final Test at Centurion, which begins next Friday (Jan 21).
England have fitness worries about several of their bowlers: Steve Harmison managed only 12.5 overs in South Africa's first innings at Johannesburg before suffering a calf injury, Matthew Hoggard has suffered from cramp, there is an as-yet-unconfirmed suggestion that Andrew Flintoff has picked up a mysterious foot injury to go with his side strain, Ashley Giles dislocated his right thumb early in this match, and Simon Jones is having back trouble. And the only fully fit fast bowler, James Anderson, bowled waywardly in the first innings at the Wanderers.
Lewis, 29, has been one of the most consistent performers in county cricket in recent seasons - in 2004 he finished with 57 wickets at 25.26, down slightly on his 2003 return of 74 at 24.32. In all he has taken 469 wickets in first-class cricket, with a best performance of 8 for 95 against the Zimbabwean tourists at Gloucester in 2000.
The selectors have sent for Lewis even though Darren Gough, who took 229 wickets in 58 matches before announcing his retirement from Test cricket in 2003, is also on his way to South Africa. Gough is still part of England's one-day squad, and arrives in Johannesburg tomorrow with the other one-day specialists.
