WICB XI v Bangladeshis, Grenada, 3rd day

Dwayne Smith blazes a hundred in drawn match

Wisden Cricinfo staff

May 25, 2004

West Indies Cricket Board XI 320 for 5 dec and 163 for 5 (Dwayne Smith 103*) drew with Bangladeshis 161 (Ashraful 73, Banks 4-42)
Scorecard

Dwayne Smith hammered an unbeaten 103 off a mere 70 balls to light up the final day's play of the tour match between West Indies Cricket Board XI and the Bangladeshis. Smith's effort spoiled what was a reasonable effort from the Bangladeshi bowlers in the second innings, as they restricted the WICB XI to 163 for 5 in the drawn game. Earlier, their batsmen continued to disappoint, being bowled out for just 161 after resuming at 124 for 4.

Mohammad Ashraful added just six to his overnight score of 67 before falling to Jermaine Lawson. Ashraful's watchful innings had consumed all of 167 balls, and his dismissal sparked off a lower-order collapse, as the Bangladeshis lost their last five wickets for just 18. Omari Banks was the most successful bowler with three wickets while Lawson, included in the West Indian squad for the first Test, picked up three.

The West Indian Cricket Board's second innings started off disastrously, as Tapash Baisya nailed both openers, Wavell Hinds and Devon Smith, with only four runs on the board. Dwayne Smith, coming in at No. 3, began to cart the bowlers around even as wickets fell regularly at the other end - the second-highest score in the innings was Dwayne Bravo's unbeaten 21. Dwayne went past 1000 first-runs during the course of his whirlwind knock as the WICB XI blazed to 163 off just 25 overs before the match was called off.

It wasn't ideal preparation for the Bangladeshis in what was their only warm-up game before the first Test, which starts on May 28 in St Lucia - their bowlers leaked 483 runs in picking up ten wickets, while their batsmen managed only 161.
