Andre Nel, the South African fast bowler, and Graeme Smith, his captain, have both been fined for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the third Test against New Zealand at Wellington.

Nel was fined 75% of his match fee for showing serious dissent towards Asoka de Silva, the umpire - he snatched his sweater away at the end of an over in which de Silva called a wide - while Smith was fined 50% of his match fee after being found guilty of showing dissent by questioning the same decision.

The fines were imposed by Clive Lloyd, the ICC's match referee, after a hearing at the end of the fourth day's play.

Smith was charged under Level 1.3 of the Code, which states that players must not show "dissent at an umpire's decision by action or verbal abuse". Nel was charged under Level 2.2 of the Code which prohibits players from showing "serious dissent at an umpire's decision by action or verbal abuse".

This is the second time that Smith and Nel have fallen foul of the Code in the last 12 months.
