Sri Lanka police help stamp out ICC Champions Trophy counterfeiting

ICC Media Release

September 26, 2002

Logo
The Sri Lankan Police force has played a major role in assisting the ICC to successfully eradicate illegal counterfeiting of the ICC and the ICC Champions Trophy logos by local clothing manufacturers and retailers.

ICC Development International (IDI), which is the commercial arm of the ICC, sought the support of the police when its investigations revealed widespread violation of the ICC logos, on unofficially produced clothing. Counterfeit clothing, particularly T-shirts, were found in shops in all main market areas including Pettah, Nugegoda and Havelock Road.

To prevent this illegal activity from continuing, police raids were made on Bernard Philknit Ltd at Dehiwala and Majestic City and many retailers including Shehzad Textiles, Noor, Karuna Textiles and DMK in the wholesale market at Pettah.

IDI representatives also found T-shirts with the ICC World Cup 2003 logo in Sports Corner on Havelock Road, following a raid on that premises.

In total, more than 300 T-shirts were seized during the police raids, together with printing equipment used to produce the counterfeit goods.

"IDI is very grateful for the excellent co-operation and support received from the police in Colombo in this matter. Their assistance has helped to eradicate the illegal counterfeiting of copyright ICC logos and so help protect the sale of legitimate and genuine souvenir clothing from the ICC Champions Trophy," said IDI's Commercial Manager, Campbell Jamieson.
