West Indies name ODI squad

Derrick Nicholas

May 20, 2002

Off-spin all-rounder Gareth Breese is the only complete newcomer in the West Indies 13-member squad named for the opening two limitedovers matches of the 2002 Cable & Wireless Trophy series against India, to be contested at Kingston's Sabina Park on Saturday and Sunday.

Breese and fast bowler Corey Collymore will replace leg-spin bowler Dinanath Ramnarine and fast bowler Adam Sanford in the 13-member squad picked for the fifth, final and deciding 2002 Cable & Wireless Test against the Indians currently in progress at Kingston.

Breese, whose father Brian is the chief executive officer of the Jamaica Cricket Association, earns his place to consistently bowling over the last two years that culminated with him taking 44 wickets at 20.18 apiece in this year's Busta Cricket Series. He also scored 404 runs.

Collymore has become a regular fixture in the West Indies limitedovers squad has been a proven matchwinner for the regional side in this form of the game. He has 26 wickets at 28.61 apiece in 20 matches and has the second best economy rate (3.93) of the bowlers selected in the squad behind Cameron Cuffy (3.73).

West Indies face India in five limited-overs internationals for the 2002 Cable & Wireless Trophy, entitled Cricket In Caymanite, created by Cuba-born Cayman Islands' artist Horacio Esteban.

Apart from the two matches at Kingston, the two teams play at Bridgetown on Wednesday, May 29, and conclude the series with back-toback contests at Port of Spain on Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2.

West Indies squad: Carl Hooper (captain), Brian Lara (vicecaptain), Gareth Breese, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Pedro Collins, Corey Collymore, Cameron Cuffy, Mervyn Dillon, Chris Gayle, Ryan Hinds, Wavell Hinds, Ridley Jacobs, Ramnaresh Sarwan.
