Released through the office of the acting Chief Executive of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka
A hearing was held at the end of the day's play on the third day of the Second Test Match between SL and England at the Asgiriya Stadium, Kandy, by the Match Referee, Mr H. Singh in the presence of:
Mr bandulla Warnapura - on the behalf of the acting CEO of the BCCSL Mr Rudi Koertzen - Match umpire Mr B.C. Cooray - Match umpire Mr Peter Manuel - Match umpire Air Commodore Ajit Jayasekera - Manager of SL team Mr Sanath Jayasuriya - SL Captain Mr Marvan Atapattu - VC SL Captain
With regard to the dissent shown by Sanath Jayasuriya when given out whilst walking back to the pavilion and before crossing the boundary and being in full view of the watching general public and the International telecast viewers.
Having given consideration to the explanation put forward by My Jayasuriya, I find him guilty of violating ICC players code of conduct numbers Nos. 3, 2 and 1 (in that order) whereby as captain he also carries additional responsibilities of playing the game in its true spirit. Therefore I issue him with a suspended sentence of two Test Matches and two ODI's effective from the end of this Second Test Match and extending for a period of six months.
(11th March - 10th Sept 2001)
He is also fined 60% of his match fee
