June 28, 2001

  • It was the 1730th ODI in cricket history.

  • It was India's 466th and Zimbabwe's 186th match.

  • It was the 36th match between these two sides. The record now reads : India 28,Zimbabwe 6,tied two.

  • It was the seventh match between these two sides in Zimbabwe. The record now reads : India 5, Zimbabwe 2.

  • Umpires MA Esat and Jeff Fenwick were officiating in their fifth and third match respectively.

  • Guy Whittall, playing in his 133rd match, became eighth player to captain Zimbabwe in a One-Day International match. Only Grant Flower has captained Zimbabwe after playing in more matches than Whittall. Surprisingly Zimbabwe has now used three captains in three matches of this tournament. Grant Flower was the in charge in the opening match against West Indies on June 23 and Heath Streak took upon the burden in the match against India on June 24.

  • Guy Whittall became second Zimbabwean to score a fifty on captaincy debut after Duncan Fletcher who made 69* against Australia at Nottingham on June 9,1983. Whittall also became 26th player in all to score a 50 plus score on captaincy debut. Of these four went on to reach three figure mark. They are New Zealander Glenn Turner (171* v East Africa at Birmingham on June 7,1975), West Indian Richie Richardson (106* v Pakistan at Sharjah on October 7,1991) ,India's Sachin Tendulkar (110 v Sri Lanka at Colombo RPS on August 8,1996) and Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya (102 v Zimbabwe at Colombo SSC on January 6,1998).

  • Zaheer Khan (4-42) recorded the best figures by an Indian on Zimbabwean soil. The previous best was the 3-36 by Ajit Agarkar in the last match. This also equaled Zaheer's best performance. He had returned identical figures against Zimbabwe at Sharjah on October 26,2000.

  • Saurav Ganguly when on 32,completed his 1000 runs against Zimbabwe. He was playing his 24th match match against Zimbabwe. Ganguly became only the second batsman in all ODIs to reach this landmark. The only other being teammate Sachin Tendulkar. The following table lists leading run scorers in ODIs against Zimbabwe :
