West Indies select teenage fast bowler for day-night clash

Charlie Austin

December 10, 2001

Teenage fast bowler Jermaine Lawson will make his international debut on Tuesday as West Indies try to break their losing run against Sri Lanka in the third match of the LG Abans triangular series.

The 19-year-old Jamaican, who has played just five first-class matches, was called into the West Indian squad after Reon King returned to the Caribbean with a hernia. Lawson will replace fellow fast bowler Marlon Black in an otherwise unchanged side.

Sri Lanka will not confirm their final eleven until the morning, but the indications are that they will name an unchanged team.

The inclusion of an additional spinner, leggie Upul Chandana, will be considered on the Premadasa pitch that tends to favour the slower bowlers.

However, with two frontline spinners and the part-time off-breaks of Russel Arnold and left-arm orthodox spin of Sanath Jayasuriya, the team is already well equipped in the slow bowling department.

Sri Lanka start the day-night clash as overwhelming favourites after their supremacy in the Test matches and blistering demolition of Zimbabwe in the opening encounter.

Sri Lanka:

Sanath Jayasuriya (capt), Marvan Atapattu, Avishka Gunawardene, Mahela Jayawardene, Russel Arnold, Kumar Sangakkara, Suresh Perera, Kumar Dharmasena, Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas, Nuwan Zoysa

West Indies:

Carl Hooper (capt), Daren Ganga, Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Brian Lara, Marlon Samuels, Ridley Jacobs, Neil McGarrell, Jermaine Lawson, Pedro Collins, Corey Colleymore
