Dungarpur suggests sub-committee to improve domestic cricket

April 19, 2001

Former Indian cricket board (BCCI) president Raj Singh Dungarpur has suggested setting up of a three member sub-committee to look into domestic cricket structure.

Dungarpur told PTI in Mumbai that he had suggested to BCCI chief Dr A C Muthiah to set up a sub-committee comprising former Indian skipper Bishen Singh Bedi, former Test opener Arun Lal and coach Vasu Paranjape to restructure domestic cricket.

Referring to the dinner hosted by Cricket Club of India (CCI) for former Indian cricketers here on Sunday, he said "it was a fruitful exercise and they (ex-cricketers) exchanged their views with the president and vice versa. There was plenty of co-ordination".

He said, at the dinner, Arun Lal opined that an inter-city tournament be initiated which could also help players, who currently play in places like Scotland and Bangladesh, where the standard of the game is not very high, to earn their living.

"Arun Lal, who is also a TV commentator, supported night cricket at the domestic level, while Bedi and Paranjape suggested that it should have more variety", Dungarpur said.

Underlining his call for more domestic cricket involving senior players, Dungarpur said, "it might be interesting to note that an allrounder like Kapil Dev has never bowled to a batsman like Krishnamachari Srikkanth in Ranji Trophy, though both of them played for the country for a long time".
