Day 2: India v New Zealand, Statistical highlights

  • Javagal Srinath (6 for 45) achieved his best figures against New Zealand.He bettered his previous best of 5 for 95 at Hamilton in January this year.

  • It was the sixth instance of a five wicket innings haul for him in his 39th Test (fourth in 18th Test at home soil) and second in 7th Test against NewZealand.

  • It was the third consecutive time Srinath captured five (or more) wickets in an innings (he had returned with figures of 5 for 46 and 8 for 86 against Pakistan at Calcutta in February this year). With this he equalled Venkatapathy Raju's Indian record of five wicket hauls in three consecutive innings.Raju had the figures of 5 for 38 and 6 for 87 against SriLanka at Ahmedabad in 1993-94 and then took 5 for 60 against WestIndies at Mumbai in 1994-95.

  • Srinath has now taken 26 wickets in 7 Tests against against New Zealand-most by an Indian pacer against NewZealand.Previously Kapil Dev had taken 25 wickets in 10 Tests.However the record of most wickets in a career for India against NewZealand is held by Bishan Singh Bedi with 57 wickets in 12 Tests.

  • Sadagoppan Ramesh became 18th Indian to score a fifty on his first appearance against NewZealand (later Gandhi became the 19th). Ramesh has now scored 554 runs at an average of 61.55 in 10 innings of 5 Tests with five fifty plus scores.

  • The unbroken partnership of 115 runs between Gandhi and Ramesh is fourth highest for India for first wicket against NewZealand. It was seventh century stand for India for first wicket (fourth on Indian soil).
