Singapore CA season preview

Tony Munro

February 19, 1999

Reigning champion, United World College, will commence its Singapore Cricket Association title defence this Sunday (February 21) against Indian Association Eagles. In the other match to be played this weekend, last year's knockout winner, Ceylon Sports Club, will host Singapore Cricket Association Colts. The first round will be completed on February 28 when Singapore Recreation Club visits Singapore Cricket Club.

All clubs play each other three times over the course of the competition. Here are some player details about the respective clubs:
United World College - The defending title-holder. Captained by Scott McMahon, UWC will also look to Gary Higge, David Ng, Les Buckley and wicket-keeper Martin Sederight to maintain its grip on the silverware
Singapore Cricket Club - Last year's runner-up and arguably the favourites for 1999. Skippered by Richard Gubbins, it's other key players are Zubin Schroff, A.Vijay, N.Balasubramanium and veterans, Stacey Muruthi and Rex Martens
Singapore Recreation Club - It's prominent players are captain Rahul Kapoor, Sandeep Puri, Saurabh Mahajan, Aurash Abrahan, Amnesh Gabba
Indian Association - Despite boasting national captain Kiran Deshpande, IA will be skipped by Sunder Mani. Other players expected to shine include S.Jayaram, Harish Dongre and K.Suresh
Ceylon Sports Club - Captained by Sarika Prasad, CSC's spearheads are right-arm off-spinner Dinesh Chelvathurai, Roshan Ariyatileke, T.Ravichandran, T.Jeyabalan and Roshan Ariyatileke
SCA Colts - Led by national coach Grant Stanley, Colts also includes former Indian twelfth man Abi Satham as well as rising schoolboy stars Z.Rengshun, Rishi Kaul and Manbir Singh.
