Quite a few personal milestones will be achieved by the Sri Lankan
cricketers during the 10-day Wills international knockout cricket
tournament in Dhaka from October 24 to November 2. Nearest to doing
so is ace spinner Muthiah Muralitharan who will be making his 100th
appearance for his country when Sri Lanka meet the winners of the New
Zealand-Zimbabwe tie in their quarter-final game on Monday.
Other milestones which are in line during the tournament are Hashan
Tillekeratne's 3,000 runs (18 runs short), Roshan Mahanama's 5,000
runs (158 runs short), and skipper Arjuna Ranatunga's 7,000 runs (164
runs short).
Considering the fact the maximum number of matches that Sri Lanka will
play in the tournament is three (if they go up to the final), these
batsmen have a very slim chance of achieving these milestones,
excepting Tillekeratne, who has only a handful of runs to get.
Two other colleagues of Muralitharan, Romesh Kaluwitharana and
Pramodya Wickremasinghe may have to await the next tournament in
Sharjah, for their 100th one-day appearance. Both have played in 96
matches each.
