Wills Cup: Kallis, Wallace atop averages

Hasan Masood

South African Jacques Kallis was the best all-rounder in the Wills International Cup which concluded at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Sunday.

The right hand batsman and medium pacer, who helped the Proteas to lift the cup taking five wickets against West Indies in the final, seems to have enjoyed his most memorable time in Dhaka during the nine-day long knockout tournament involving all the nine Test playing nations.

He scored a century against world champions Sri Lanka in the semifinals and also helped to eliminate England in the quarters taking three wickets Kallis in three matches took highest eight wickets and also scored 164 runs including that match-winning unbeaten 113 against the Lankans.

West Indies opener Philo Wallace, who scored a magnificent 103 against South Africa in the final, earned the distinction of scoring most runs in the tournament. The right-handed Barbados captain, enjoying his recall to the West Indies side after seven years with a brilliant form, scored a total of 221 runs in his three innings.

But the most disappointing performance came from Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin who scored only three runs in his 300 and 301st appearances in the instant version of cricket.

There were four centuries scored in eight matches. Zimbabwean captain Alistair Campbell scored the first ton against New Zealand followed by Indian master batsman Sachin who scored 141 against Australia on September 28. Jacques Kallis scored the third one against Sri Lanka followed by Wallace in the final.

Sachin and West Indies fast bowler Marvyn Dillon took six wickets each while six bowlers - Keith Arthurton, Muttiah Muralitharan, Steve Elworthy, Hansie Cronje and, Geoff Allot and Pat Symcox - captured four wickets respectively.

South African Jonty Rhodes took highest five catches.
