Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Day 1 start scheduled for 10.05 Local Time (14.05 GMT/2.05 NZT)

welcome to CricInfo.com's coverage of the second Test between the
West Indies and New Zealand at the National Stadium at St George's
        in Grenada
it's the first ever Test match here, and the West Indies have won
the toss and elected to bowl first
both teams have made changes, with Cameron Cuffy in for the injured
Mervyn Dillon and leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo in for rookie
pacer Darren Powell for the West Indies, while Scott Styris at
last makes his Test debut for the weary Daryl Tuffey
it'll be Pedro Collins to open the bowling to Mark Richardson with
Lou Vincent at the other end
0.1 Collins to Richardson, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
        leaves alone to the keeper
0.2 Collins to Richardson, one run, much straighter, tucked off the
body towards vacant midwicket, gets the visitors underway
0.3 Collins to Vincent, no run, shortish rising ball just a fraction
outside off stump and straightening, shoulders arms, leaving on
height alone, passes over the stumps to the keeper
0.4 Collins to Vincent, no run, similar ball, this time gets into line
to defend on the leg side
0.5 Collins to Vincent, no run, and again, defends from back in the
        crease, up towards mid on
0.6 Collins to Vincent, (noball) no run, oversteps, shoulders arms
        outside off stump
0.6 Collins to Vincent, no run, pushes back on the off side in defence

End of over 1 (2 runs) New Zealand 2/0
PT Collins 1-0-2-0 (1nb)
MH Richardson 1* (2b) L Vincent 0* (5b)

it'll be Cameron Cuffy to open up from the other end
1.1 Cuffy to Richardson, two runs, shortish, straight ball, tucked off
the hip through backward square leg, Richardson scoots back for
the second as long leg comes around to field in the deep
1.2 Cuffy to Richardson, no run, shortish lifting ball angling away
outside off stump, shoulders arms to the keeper
1.3 Cuffy to Richardson, no run, a bit fuller just outside off stump
and angling away, leaves again to the keeper
1.4 Cuffy to Richardson, no run, and similar once again, a bit wider
and Richardson is happy to raise the arms up high to leave again
1.5 Cuffy to Richardson, no run, gets his line better, fullish and
straight, clipped firmly off the legs but can't get it far past
short leg on the bounce who partially stops it
1.6 Cuffy to Richardson, wide: no run, rather poor ball, incredibly
wide and moving wider outside off stump, cuts the return crease
        through to the keeper
Cuffy consistently in the low 130s in terms of kph in his opening
        over
1.6 Cuffy to Richardson, no run, but cranks it up to 138kph for the
last ball, full outside off stump, firmly driven straight up to
        mid off

End of over 2 (3 runs) New Zealand 5/0
CE Cuffy 1-0-3-0 (1w)
L Vincent 0* (5b) MH Richardson 3* (8b)

2.1 Collins to Vincent, no run, oooh! very good straight ball swinging
in from just a fraction outside off stump late, Vincent pushes
half forward in defence, squeezes through between bat and pad,
just trickling wide of off stump
2.2 Collins to Vincent, no run, much better in defence, getting right
in behind a shorter, straight ball, firmly stroked back to the
        bowler
2.3 Collins to Vincent, no run, fullish ball just outside off stump,
props well forward with bat/pad tucked together, pushing up to mid
        off
2.4 Collins to Vincent, SIX, whoa! short rising ball aimed at the
helmet, Vincent pivots and hooks, a bit uncontrolled and he'll
feel happy he got enough wood on this one, looked dangerous, but
it flies over the fine leg boundary comfortably
interesting way to get off the mark, Vincent will certainly take
them any way they come, but may not last too long if that's the
        standard mode of play
2.5 Collins to Vincent, no run, very well bowled! inswinging yorker,
beats Vincent very well, overbalancing a little as he tries to dig
it out, appeal for lbw as it strikes him on the boot, but that was
certainly heading down the leg side
2.6 Collins to Vincent, no run, beaten! lovely left-arm bowling from
Collins, gets the final ball of the over to slide straight on past
the groping outside edge, using the natural angle across the
        right-hander

3.2 Cuffy to Richardson, no run, full and rather wide outside off
stump, leaves alone to the keeper
3.3 Cuffy to Richardson, wide: no run, and very wide again well outside
off stump, signalled wide by umpire Koertzen this time
3.3 Cuffy to Richardson, no run, still relatively wide outside off
stump so no stroke is required, rising off a slightly shorter
        length safely to the keeper
3.4 Cuffy to Richardson, no run, much straighter but still drifting
away from the left-hander, who shoulders arms to the keeper
outside off stump, building up his pace better now too, just
taking a little time to warm up the radar
3.5 Cuffy to Richardson, FOUR, much better bowling! fullish ball probes
at Richardson outside off stump, he has a jab at it, squirting a
thick outside edge along the ground, just wide of third slip, down
to the vacant third man boundary
3.6 Cuffy to Richardson, no run, full and wide outside off stump, left
        alone to the keeper

4.3 Collins to Vincent, no run, shuffles across his crease into line

for lbw by Collins, pitching outside leg

straightening on Vincent, props forward to defend back to the

forward to defend back to the bowler

stump to require a stroke from Richardson

        away
5.3 Cuffy to Richardson, no run, good tight fullish ball just outside
off stump, pushes well forward, defending up to mid off
5.4 Cuffy to Richardson, no run, interesting shortish, straight ball on
off stump, Richardson flinches at it as it rises a little more
from a length, pushes it down towards backward point
5.5 Cuffy to Richardson, no run, fullish ball just outside off stump,
        shoulders arms to the keeper
5.6 Cuffy to Richardson, no run, tight shortish ball on off stump,

forward with bat/pad tucked together, pushing up to mid off
6.2 Collins to Vincent, no run, good ball! angling across the right
hander, Vincent watches closely and raises the arms up high to
leave wisely, through to keeper Jacobs
6.3 Collins to Vincent, no run, tight shortish ball on off stump, hops
across in behind it, defending resolutely towards cover point
6.4 Collins to Vincent, no run, full and quicker on off stump, 137kph,
Vincent just squeezes it out towards mid off in defence, playing
for the extra swing back into him
6.5 Collins to Vincent, no run, shortish ball angling across him
outside off stump, comfortably left alone to the keeper
6.6 Collins to Vincent, no run, fullish ball swinging into the legs,
clipped firmly, but straight to short leg who fields on the bounce
with sharp reflexes, third straight maiden as this opening pair
        find their targets better now

Adam Sanford on to bowl, replacing Cuffy at the bowling crease
7.1 Sanford to Richardson, FOUR, welcome to the crease Mr Sanford,
drops in a real short loosener, Richardson's eyes light up and he
pulls it strongly away through midwicket
7.2 Sanford to Richardson, FOUR, and two in a row! this time short and
wide outside off stump, smashed away through backward point
a poor start from Sanford, looking fairly laboured and dropping it
in far too short, not learning too much from his first Test
        tribulations
7.3 Sanford to Richardson, FOUR, dear oh dear, despite a word from his
captain in the distance, and fellow quick at mid off, he bowls in
exactly the same place and Richardson smacks it away to the point
        boundary
now Hooper comes all the way down for an extended chat with
        Sanford!
7.4 Sanford to Richardson, one run, he comes around the wicket as a
result, but strays down the leg side, clipped away down to long
        leg for an easy single
7.5 Sanford to Vincent, no run, full outside off stump, firmly stroked
straight to short cover, 128kph, looking fairly ordinary in terms
of pace in his first over, needs to crank it up to trouble
7.6 Sanford to Vincent, no run, much better ball to finish his horror
opening over, shortish and just outside off stump, no deviation
off the track however, left to the keeper

shuffles into line, defending back to the bowler again
8.6 Collins to Richardson, no run, short and wide outside off stump,
Richardson chases after it, cutting and missing to the keeper,
dangerously so, looked only to possibly edge that particular ball
        shaping away

        scrambling through
9.2 Sanford to Richardson, three runs, shot! shortish, straight ball on
leg stump, superbly timed off the hip through backward square leg,
looked to be going all the way but the last 10m in the outfield
slows it up dramatically, Chanderpaul overhauls it
9.3 Sanford to Vincent, no run, very full outside off stump, Vincent
strongly drives it straight up to mid off

hip straight to backward square leg

pushed back on the off side of the pitch, sneaks past the bowler
and Vincent calls through for a tight single, sprinting in the end
as Hinds fields very smartly across from mid off, but can't hit
        direct at his end

11.6 Sanford to Richardson, two runs, shot! overpitched, comes across in

        a fine opening spell
14.1 Cuffy to Vincent, no run, good ball angling right in to Vincent on
off stump, defends back on the leg side of the pitch
14.2 Cuffy to Vincent, no run, fullish ball angling a long way in from
wide on the crease, struck on the pad and drops down in close on
the leg side, Cuffy appeals to umpire Venkat on his lonesome,
heading down leg, as the batsmen almost mix-up their running
        before staying where
they are as they eyed the quick single
14.3 Cuffy to Vincent, (noball) no run, oooh! Cuffy oversteps and
negates what was a very good ball, seaming back sharply between
bat and pad outside off stump, Jacobs lazily thrusts a glove out

14.4 Cuffy to Vincent, no run, fair length ball but some width outside

and the clock just ticks over to five past the hour, the bails are
removed and it's time for lunch, New Zealand playing well to get
        to 77/1
a touch of deja vu as New Zealand were also 77/1 at lunch on the
opening day of the first Test at Bridgetown, and Richardson was
also on 41 at that stage!
the West Indies wouldn't mind a repeat of the second session, which
saw Richardson dismissed without adding to his lunch time score,
and the visitors slumped to 117/5 soon afterwards, but the pitch
here has generally looked a lot better for batting
there are certainly some signs of occasional extra bounce and
movement, but not really any more than you'd expect from a first
morning pitch, overall Hooper will be disappointed with the result
after winning the toss and sending the opposition in again
Collins and Cuffy had a very good spell apiece, the latter after he
returned for 7 overs at the D'Arbeau End from which Collins bowled
to begin with, and took the wicket of Vincent with one which
climbed more than the batsman expected and a late decision
in terms of defensive stroke cost him his wicket as he played on
Sanford disappointed in a brief spell, his first 3 balls going for
boundaries, and he recovered (hard not to get worse than that,
admittedly!) but not well enough for his captain's liking and spin
        was introduced into the attack
surprisingly 11 overs of spin in the first session of the Test,
meaning a healthy 31 in the first two hours, as Nagamootoo
extracted some good turn and bounce early on, using his variations
well, and was rather accurate in general
Richardson looks very solid and trying to settle himself down for a
lengthy stay at the crease after selling himself a bit short in
recent Test innings, while Fleming has struggled early on, but the
home team know what he's capable of, battling out of a
trough in the first Test to steer New Zealand to what turned out to
        be a match-winning innings

near that one, but he tickles a faint edge through to Jacobs,
dropped off the bottom edge into the back of his back leg, Jacobs

Hooper using the considerable breeze present throughout the day to
his advantage, drifting it into the left-hander as it moves across

it's a moderate crowd in for this first ever Test in Grenada,
probably a lot more in tomorrow, but the mob that are here are

less than a couple of hours away

a remarkable 34 overs bowled and just 53 runs added, as Richardson
and Astle dug their claws in, and just batted, and batted, and
batted, and batted, and ... without looking for any expansive
        strokes at all
it was a rather disciplined effort by Astle in particular, who has
played contrasting hands in consecutive innings this series,
reaching a 51-ball half century in the second innings at
Bridgetown, and is now on 20 from 82 balls, with just one boundary
for Richardson it was largely run of the mill stuff, his strength
being to leave what he can outside off stump, and rely on two or
three favoured strokes to pick off his runs, and he's performed
his duty admirably so far, when trouble was brewing after
a quick double breakthrough by the home team immediately after
lunch saw the game swing almost full tilt, and though the West
Indies will be largely very happy with the session from a raw
numbers point of view, they will be disappointed not to press home
their opportunities to make further inroads while the going looked
good, remembering that they have to make all of the play if they
want to square this series - batting time suits New Zealand to a
        tea
Hooper worked to a very deliberate and effective plan with his
bowling rotation during the session, with the quicks all operating
from the D'Arbeau End and the spinners at the River End throughout
Collins and Cuffy were very reliable, bowling a nagging line and
length, and the batsmen simply had to respect it or pay the price,
while Nagamootoo and Hooper probed away at the other, perhaps
creating more doubt in the batsmens' minds than the quicks,
in actual fact, which is quite astonishing if one things of the
typical West Indies first day pitches - but going by how they have
behaved in this series, perhaps they will be the exception rather
than the rule in the near future at least!
already 65 overs bowled in the day and only 25 to get through in
the final session, so should get some bonus overs in and no
overtime, as the spinners have bowled 28 overs between them
        already, almost half
play is set to resume in just over 10 minutes time at 3:05pm local

a final session of 28 overs, which saw 78 runs and 2 wickets,
balancing out towards the end, certainly the home team happier
with the second hour, with just 25 runs conceded in 11 overs, and
taking 2 wickets to round off the day well, and almost nabbing
a third in the form of Astle, but it wasn't quite to be
208/5 suggests a relatively even day's play, and to a fair extent
it probably was, but the West Indies will be feeling a little
fortunate, and the New Zealanders a little annoyed, with two quick
wickets falling right at the end of the day, both cases of
batsman error, but with one of them being a nightwatchman, the
        impact is slightly lessened
runs were hard to come by today, partly due to a number of factors,
firstly was some generally tidy, tight bowling, then the
willingness of the batsmen to leave anything they didn't have to
play (certain exceptions being a few of the dismissals,
particularly those of Fleming, Richardson and Vettori), and the
placid nature of the pitch which tended to hold up a bit, not
encouraging free stroke play with the ball coming on at a nice
pace, meaning full value for shots was hard to come by
Richardson and Astle quite obviously the stand outs with the bat
today, Richardson batting through the entire day barring 15
deliveries, seeing off two new balls, doing what he does best,
utilising his limited array of strokes and picking the right times
to use them, respecting his limitations, while Astle took an
unusually muted approach for a long time from the start of his
innings, realising that New Zealand were in danger of losing
another 'clump' of wickets in a hurry, and gradually picked up the
tempo, being most savage on Nagamootoo for a period, tucking in as
he neared his 50 before re-establishing his innings once the new
        ball was taken
Collins again shouldering the bowling burden, taking three of the
five wickets to fall, rather parsimonious, bowling good lines,
though all three of his wickets came from fairly poor strokes, it
must be said, but nevertheless, due reward for a good day
overall, while Cuffy was up and down, improving with successive
spells, gaining the opening breakthrough which paved the way for a
        mini-collapse of 3-21 earlier on
Sanford struggled again, bowling too short too often, at his pace
he simply can't afford to, and should've really been looking to
use it as a surprise delivery rather than his stock one, but he
too did have a better period in the afternoon
Nagamootoo and Hooper shouldered much of the bowling throughout the
day until the new ball was taken after 82 overs, with as many as
39 overs on the first day being spin (meaning 3 bonus overs fitted
into the day thanks to good over rates), and both had
their moments, but didn't really look like taking swagfuls of
wickets, but Hooper could've bowled himself more often, seemingly
reluctant to do so as captain, the pitch is taking an encouraging
amount of turn so early on in the match
that concludes the opening day's coverage from CricInfo.com, still
plenty left to happen in this match, it seems the foreward has
only just been written so far - it's too hard to tell as yet how

Park at St George's in Grenada
the start of play has been delayed this morning due to a bit of
overnight rain, the inclement weather has been hanging around this
morning and it is only just now the covers are able to be taken
        off
it'll take around half an hour to prepare the ground ready for
play, so perhaps at around 10:45am local time (1445 GMT, 2:45am
NZT) or thereabouts we can hope to see the players appearing for
        the resumption

Match State: Delay - Day 2 - Start of play delayed due to rain

it's now 10:40am local time (1440 GMT, 2:40am NZT) and it remains
overcast at the ground, the ground staff are busily mowing the
pitch, and as yet there is no word from the umpires as to an
official restart time, but it can't be too far away
the umpires have now announced an official start time of 11am local
time (1500 GMT, 3am NZT) and there will be a one-hour session to
lunch, then the last two sessions will be two and a half hours
        each
that is an extension of 30 minutes in both of those sessions, with
a scheduled close of play time of 6pm local time (2200 GMT, 10am
        NZT)
the players make their way out on to the field now, we'll still
have 90 overs to bowl today at this stage
it'll be Cuffy to resume from the River End, bowling to McMillan
93.1 Cuffy to McMillan, no run, a slow warm-up ball to begin with,
shortish and coming back in from outside off stump to McMillan,

arms as it brushes past the front pad, just shaving wide of the
