5th ODI: India v West Indies at Vadodara, 18 Nov 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Delay - Wet outfield - start at 9:30 IST

Hello and welcome to CricInfo's live coverage of the fifth one-
dayer of this seven-game India-West Indies series, about to be
played at the IPCL Sports Complex ground at Vadodara, or Baroda
        for short.
It is, not surprisingly, a warm and sunny day; few days in Western
India aren't. Heavy overnight dew, however, has made for some
sodden outfield conditions, and the start of the game delayed to
        9:30 IST.
Each innings, consequently, has been reduced to 48 overs, a
situation similar to the second match at Nagpur. That one,
however, was further reduced to 47 overs per side after crowd
trouble, and one hopes Baroda does not go that path today.
If it goes Ahmedabad's way instead, we can not only be assured of
no crowd trouble, but also of a cracker of a match. An awesome
West Indian batting display was further surpassed by a fantastic
        Indian chase of 325.
Rahul Dravid posted a magnificently paced century, easily his best
in one-dayers and the spine of the Indian chase that also saw VVS
Laxman and Sanjay Bangar hit crucial fifties.
The series is now levelled at two-all, and cliched as it is, both
teams do really have everything to play for at Baroda. As has been
the norm in this series, both teams will depend on their batting
        to win them the game.
Carl Hooper won the toss and opted to field first. The West Indies
bring in Ricardo Powell for Mahendra Nagamootoo and Corey
Collymore for an injured Merv Dillon.
India bring in L Balaji for his one-day debut in place of Ashish
Nehra, who was rather expensive in the last game.
       Teams:
India: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, VVS
Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Sanjay Bangar, Harbhajan

0.5 Collins to Sehwag, (noball) one run, drifting on the pads, worked

        into the point region.

behind square for Sehwag's first boundary.
2.3 Collins to Sehwag, (noball) FOUR, cut away for four more, Sehwag's

3.4 Drakes to Ganguly, no run, pushed to the short midwicket fielder
        this time.
3.5 Drakes to Ganguly, FOUR, short of a length again, and this time

short midwicket with the swivel to send it to the fence.
3.6 Drakes to Ganguly, no run, on the legs again, and this time Ganguly
flicks it off the pads but straight to fine leg inside the circle.

V Sehwag 18* (14b 3x4) SC Ganguly 7* (12b 1x4)

pitched up outside the off, and driven to one of the fielders in a
        packed offside cordon.
4.2 Collins to Sehwag, no run, short ball, heading away from Sehwag,
and the angle makes it easy for Sehwag to spot it and sway away
        early.
4.3 Collins to Sehwag, no run, erring in line, on the pads, and Sehwag
flicks it off the pads, Hooper fielding nicely at short midwicket.
4.4 Collins to Sehwag, no run
4.5 Collins to Sehwag, FOUR, pitched up and on the legs, and this time
Sehwag doesn't miss out on the mistake, flicking it over Hooper at
short midwicket wristily and easily to the midwicket fence for
        four.
4.6 Collins to Sehwag, FOUR, pitched up again, and although this is on
middle and off, Sehwag puts it away between bowler and mid-on with
a powerful smack for four more to long on. Super shot!

one and caresses it through the covers for four.
5.5 Drakes to Ganguly, no run, short and Ganguly works it to the
legside and wants a single but is sent back by Sehwag.
5.6 Drakes to Ganguly, FOUR, short of a length, but only just, and
Ganguly takes it outside the off and times it exquisitely in front
of square on the offside for his second four of the over.

VC Drakes 3-0-17-0

       Collymore into the attack now.
6.1 Collymore to Sehwag, wide: no run, and right away drifting down
leg, a loosener that is wided by the umpire.
6.1 Collymore to Sehwag, no run, short of a length, outside the off,

SC Ganguly 16* (19b 3x4) V Sehwag 29* (26b 5x4)

A surprising bowling change, Wavell Hinds being introduced into the
        attack.
7.1 Hinds to Ganguly, one run, short of a length, and Ganguly steering
        it to third man.
7.2 Hinds to Sehwag, SIX, short of a length, and Sehwag tries to pull
it away, gets a slight top-edge but still gets enough bat on the
ball to get it over long-on for the first six of the match.
7.3 Hinds to Sehwag, FOUR, short of a length again, but the ball does
not get up too high, and Sehwag takes it off middle stump and
paddle-pulls it behind square on the onside for four.
7.4 Hinds to Sehwag, FOUR, short again, outside the off, sitting up and
begging to be hit, and Sehwag drags it over midwicket for four
more! Making a mockery of this bowling change here, Sehwag.
7.5 Hinds to Sehwag, one run, a touch fuller, and Sehwag works it to
midwicket for just the single now.
7.6 Hinds to Ganguly, no run, played to short extra cocer.

End of over 8 (16 runs) India 65/0 (RR: 8.12)
WW Hinds 1-0-16-0 - Pavilion End
V Sehwag 44* (30b 7x4 1x6) SC Ganguly 17* (21b 3x4)

8.1 Collymore to Sehwag, (noball) no run, overstepping there, but it
drifted down leg enough to be called a wide anyway!
8.1 Collymore to Sehwag, FOUR, absolutely flayed over the offside
infield for four more, Sehwag taking that from outside off and
throwing everything but the kitchen sink into the stroke!
8.2 Collymore to Sehwag, no run
8.3 Collymore to Sehwag, no run, slower ball, outside the off, and
Sehwag tries to drive it and misses completely. Nice change of
        apce.
8.4 Collymore to Sehwag, one run, steered to third man for a single,
        Sehwag moves onto 48.
8.5 Collymore to Ganguly, no run, full and Ganguly stops short on his
on-drive, the ball going uppishly to the left of the bowler, who
gets his fingers to it but drops the tough chance.
8.6 Collymore to Ganguly, one run, worked off the pads for a single.

End of over 9 (7 runs) India 72/0 (RR: 8.00)

The Hinds experiment ends for now. Carl Hooper into the attack
        instead from the Pavilion end.
9.1 Hooper to Ganguly, no run, trying to sweep the ball, Ganguly gets a
slight edge that makes the ball bobble away on the offside.
9.2 Hooper to Ganguly, no run, worked off the pads, but not far past
        leg slip.
9.3 Hooper to Ganguly, no run, and down the track, but Hooper sees him
coming and pushes it through quicker, so only a bottom edge that
does nt even make it off the square.
9.4 Hooper to Ganguly, FOUR, swept again, but successfully this time,
wide of leg slip and yet fine enough to get four for it.
9.5 Hooper to Ganguly, FOUR, down the track, and this time Ganguly gets
the shot going, cleraing mid-on with the lofted drive to get four
        to long on.
9.6 Hooper to Ganguly, FOUR, anudder! delicately glided to third man,
almost a dab more than anything else, and although a fielder gives
chase, he cannot beat the ball to the ropes.

        safely to short midwicket.
10.2 Collymore to Sehwag, FOUR, taking it on the full on middle stump,
Sehwag chips it over the head of the bowler and umpire to get
        four. Fifty for Sehwag!
10.3 Collymore to Sehwag, no run, driven powerfully, but straight to
        cover.
10.4 Collymore to Sehwag, OUT: full and on middle stump, and Sehwag
tries to whack it over mid-on but doesn't succeed, Chanderpaul on
the very edge of the circle reaching up and snapping up the catch.
Sehwag departs two balls after getting to his fifty.

        cut and misses out.

A good last over from Hooper, only four runs and a wicket from it,
but he will be disappointed that India have gotten as many as they
        have.
290 on this pitch - dry and looking conducive to spin - is a tough
ask, and although the West Indies batting is in good form, they
will need to play responsibly and well to win this match

Match State: Innings Break

0.1 Srinath to Gayle, one run, off the mark straight away, a single
steered to the left of point
0.2 Srinath to Hinds, no run, around the wicket to Hinds, outside the
off and Hinds probes at it and misses
0.3 Srinath to Hinds, no run, outside the off again, but this one Hinds
leaves alone, and Dravid behind the stumps fumbles the second take
        in succession
0.4 Srinath to Hinds, no run, outside the off, much too wide to tempt
Hinds, who watches it go past
0.5 Srinath to Hinds, one run, punched off the back foot to the man at
        deep point
0.6 Srinath to Gayle, FOUR, short of a length, and Srinath does not
have a sweeper cover to Gayle, so the back foot punch through the
offside runs away for the first boundary of the innings

L Balaji getting ready to bowl his first over in international
        cricket, big moment for him
1.1 Balaji to Hinds, FOUR, not such a hot baptism for Balaji, short of
a length and Hinds getting back and simply smacking that ball
        through covers for four
1.2 Balaji to Hinds, one run, worked to the legside, where Ganguly at
mid on overshoots the throw and enables the single
1.3 Balaji to Gayle, FOUR, short of a length again, and Gayle sees it
early and shuffles onto the back foot and thwacks it in front of
        point uppishly for four more
1.4 Balaji to Gayle, no run, pushed back to Balaji
1.5 Balaji to Gayle, no run, defended on the front foot, back to the
        right of the bowler
1.6 Balaji to Gayle, wide: no run, outside the off, and Gayle tries the
cut but the ball is much too wide and is rightly signalled
1.6 Balaji to Gayle, FOUR, on middle and off, again short, and Gayle
slips easily onto the back foot and smashes it yet again past
cover for four more, not a great start for Balaji in international
        cricket

2.1 Srinath to Hinds, FOUR, full and outside the off, and the West
Indians starting off very nicely indeed as Hinds smashes it for
        four through the covers
2.2 Srinath to Hinds, no run, hit powerfully but straight to mid off
2.3 Srinath to Hinds, no run, outside the off, and Hinds leaves that
alone, the line much closer to the body this time
2.4 Srinath to Hinds, FOUR, short of a length, but only marginally, and
outside the off, and Hinds yet again rocks back and punches to
cover fence. Six out of six fours to the same area, so maybe a
        case for sweeper cover?
2.5 Srinath to Hinds, FOUR, bad bowling, that was just a rank half
volley outside the off, and Hinds absolutely flays that through
the covers, hitting it so powerfully that cover fielder only turns
his head before the ball goes over the ropes
2.6 Srinath to Hinds, no run, back over the wicket now, and Hinds lets
that pass outside the off stump

3.2 Balaji to Gayle, no run, slower ball, outside the off, and Gayle
has a big heave at it and misses
3.3 Balaji to Gayle, no run, outside the off, and Gayle sees that go
        past
3.4 Balaji to Gayle, FOUR, full toss outside the off, and Gayle thwacks
that one through cover yet again, straighter this time but the
        result is the same
3.5 Balaji to Gayle, no run, outside the off, and it looks as if Gayle
simply shuts his eyes and goes for it. He misses, of course, the
        ball whistling through to Dravid
3.6 Balaji to Gayle, no run, full toss again, and Gayle misses out,
hitting that straight to mid off

Hinds whips it away to leg
4.3 Srinath to Gayle, no run, steered to point, where Yuvraj does well
        to field

past the bowler to the fence straight down the ground. And a
        noball to boot!

it from ankle height and heaves it over midwicket for maximum!
        Well struck
5.3 Balaji to Hinds, (noball) no run, slower ball outside the off,
Hinds has a poke at it and misses
5.3 Balaji to Hinds, wide: no run, and a wide this time, way outside
the off as Balaji tries not to stray down legside with fine leg up

thwacks it through the offside cordon to the fence, where there

        win
46.2 Sehwag to Powell, one run, one more to long on
46.3 Sehwag to Hooper, no run, worked to short midwicket Mohammad Kaif
46.4 Sehwag to Hooper, no run
46.5 Sehwag to Hooper, one run, worked wide of Kaif this time, and that
completes a five-wicket win for the West Indies.
Who says chasing is difficult? For the fifth time in five games,
the side chasing has won, even though this was really the best
        opportunity to break that streak
The pitch turned in the second innings and the spinners found some
assistance, but the batting of first Wavell Hinds and then Chris
Gayle put the win beyond India's reach.
When Chanderpaul and then Gayle fell in quick succession, India may
have sniffed victory, but Powell and Hooper batted intelligently
to take the West Indies to a win that sees them lead 3-2 in the
        seven-match series/
Man of the Match: Wavell Hinds
The next one-dayer, the sixth of the series, is scheduled for
Jodhpur, so do join us then on the 21st. Till then, goodbye.
