3rd ODI: India v West Indies at Rajkot, 12 Nov 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled to start at 09:00 IST (03:30 GMT)

Good day and welcome to CricInfo's live coverage of the third
        India-West Indies one-dayer at Rajkot.
A fine day greets both teams, with the sun out and a balmy breeze
blowing over the ground, tempering the heat that is common in
        Western India.
India, though, will be feeling the heat, and for a different
reason. After losing the first two games in a row, they are under
a lot of pressure to bounce back in this game.
At Jamshedpur and then at Nagpur, India's bowlers gave the game
away, unable to defend totals of 280-odd against an admittedly in-
        form West Indian line-up.
Even India's twin spin attack - much vaunted, especially in home
conditions - could not keep the like of Chris Gayle, Wavell Hinds
and Marlon Samuels quiet, and the West Indies' best batsman - Carl
Hooper - did not even have to bat in the last game.
But the tourists will be missing their captain, though; even at
Nagpur, Hooper was doubtful with a dodgy knee, and that has
apparently played up again ahead of this game.
Ridley Jacobs will thus be leading the West Indies today. In
addition, Cameron Cuffy is back into the side in place of Corey
        Collymore.
Hooper's replacement is explosive middle-order bat Ricardo Powell -
perhaps a good bet, for the West Indies have a new-found stability
at the top of the order and can afford to sacrifice Hooper's
        quietude for some panache.
For India, Anil Kumble is out for this game, and medium-pace all-
rounder Jai P Yadav plays his second international match today.
Sourav Ganguly won the toss and elected to bowl first, an indicator
that he would rather depend on his mighy batting to chase a big
total rather than his not-so-hot bowling to defend one.
0.1 Srinath to Gayle, no run, short of a length, on off stump and
moving away a touch, and Gayle leaves that alone.
0.2 Srinath to Gayle, no run, fuller this time, and Gayle plays it
uppishly in the air towards mid-on.
0.3 Srinath to Gayle, no run, pushed towards mid-off, more in control
        of this shot.
0.4 Srinath to Gayle, FOUR, full and on the off, and Gayle - with no
movement of the feet whatsoever, so that shows what form he is in!
        - hits through the line through the covers for his first four and
        his first runs as well.
0.5 Srinath to Gayle, no run, outside the off, heading away with the
angle, and Gayle watches that into Dravid's gloves.
0.6 Srinath to Gayle, no run, patted back to Srinath.

End of over 1 (4 runs) West Indies 4/0 (RR: 4.00)
J Srinath 1-0-4-0

Ashish Nehra into the attack from the other end.
1.1 Nehra to Hinds, no run, full and on leg and middle, and Hinds gets
forward and pats it towards mid-on.
1.2 Nehra to Hinds, one run, full and on the middle stump, and Hinds
drives it nicely straight back past the bowler, thinks it is going
for four, and then runs just the single as the fielder runs after
        it and throws it back!
1.3 Nehra to Gayle, FOUR, and Gayle shows how hard the straight drive
has to be hit, smacking the ball past Hinds to the left of the
        bowler for four.
1.4 Nehra to Gayle, no run, on middle and off, and Gayle shuffles back
and pushes it to the off.
1.5 Nehra to Gayle, no run, worked to mid-on.
1.6 Nehra to Gayle, no run, heading down legside, and the appeal is
aborted almost immediately because of it!

End of over 2 (5 runs) West Indies 9/0 (RR: 4.50)
A Nehra 1-0-5-0
WW Hinds 1* (2b) CH Gayle 8* (10b 2x4)

2.1 Srinath to Hinds, no run, on middle stump, heading away with the
        angle, and Gayle shoulders arms.
2.2 Srinath to Hinds, (noball) one run, on leg stump, and Hinds works
it towards square leg for a single.
2.2 Srinath to Gayle, (noball) no run, another no-ball from Srinath,
just overstepping in the effort to get some extra pace into the
        ball.
2.2 Srinath to Gayle, legbye: one run, down the legside, and Dravid
fumbles the take. Srinath is anguished, because he thinks it is an
edge, but the umpire signals a leg-bye.
2.3 Srinath to Hinds, no run, left alone outside the off.
2.4 Srinath to Hinds, no run, catches Hinds probing forward on the
front foot before heading away just past the outside edge.
2.5 Srinath to Hinds, no run, jagging away from Hinds again, but the
batsman watches this one closer and leaves it alone.
2.6 Srinath to Hinds, no run, on leg stump, and Hinds pushes
        defensively at it.

End of over 3 (4 runs) West Indies 13/0 (RR: 4.33)
J Srinath 2-0-7-0 (2nb)
CH Gayle 8* (12b 2x4) WW Hinds 2* (8b)

3.1 Nehra to Gayle, no run, poking defensively at that one, the ball
bobbling up just a touch into the offside but falling safely.
3.2 Nehra to Gayle, FOUR, short of a length, and Gayle rocks back and
stands-and-delivers, thwacking the ball wide of mid-off to the
cover fence for his third boundary.
3.3 Nehra to Gayle, no run, good comeback, Nehra putting his back into
that one and getting extra bounce, catching Gayle wafting outside
the off before beating the bat with bounce.
3.4 Nehra to Gayle, no run, pushed to mid-off.
3.5 Nehra to Gayle, wide: no run, rather late signal, Nehra drifting
down leg and Gayle missing out on a pull to a rather short ball.
3.5 Nehra to Gayle, no run, stroked back to Nehra.
3.6 Nehra to Gayle, no run, short again, and Gayle really gets into
that one, smashing it right back down the track and almost taking
a few digits off Nehra's hands as the bowler fields in his follow-
        through!

End of over 4 (5 runs) West Indies 18/0 (RR: 4.50)
A Nehra 2-0-10-0 (1w)
WW Hinds 2* (8b) CH Gayle 12* (18b 3x4)

4.1 Srinath to Hinds, no run, short of a length, and Hinds gets on his
toes and punches it into the legside.,
4.2 Srinath to Hinds, no run, on the pads, and Hinds works the ball
        towards mid-on.
4.3 Srinath to Hinds, no run, outside the off, and Hinds punches into
the off and takes off for the single, but Mohammad Kaif at extra
cover is too quick to complete the run.
4.4 Srinath to Hinds, no run, pushed to mid-on, Hinds having a rather
        quieter start than Gayle today.
4.5 Srinath to Hinds, one run, patted to mid-off, and the single taken.
4.6 Srinath to Gayle, no run, pushed to Kaif at cover again.

End of over 5 (1 run) West Indies 19/0 (RR: 3.80)
J Srinath 3-0-8-0 (2nb)
WW Hinds 3* (13b) CH Gayle 12* (19b 3x4)

5.1 Nehra to Hinds, no run, outside the off, and Hinds shoulders arms.
5.2 Nehra to Hinds, no run, drifting down leg, and Hinds pushes it to
        mid-on.
5.3 Nehra to Hinds, no run, and again down leg, and Hinds cannot work
        it any finer than mid-on.
5.4 Nehra to Hinds, no run, short of a length, and on the off, and
Hinds gets forward and punches it nicely, but straight to Kaif at
        cover.
5.5 Nehra to Hinds, no run, a snorter! short of a length, rising fast
and surely, and Hinds gets out of the way at only the last moment,
flirting for a second with the thought of a pull before opting out
        of the stroke.
5.6 Nehra to Hinds, one run, steered past a diving point behind square
on the off for the single.

End of over 6 (1 run) West Indies 20/0 (RR: 3.33)
A Nehra 3-0-11-0 (1w)
WW Hinds 4* (19b) CH Gayle 12* (19b 3x4)

6.1 Srinath to Hinds, no run, full and Hinds tries to get after that
one, having a huge heave at it, but the ball keeps a touch lower
than expected, beating the flashing blade.
6.2 Srinath to Hinds, FOUR, outside the off, and Hinds shuffles to off
        - getting his feet moving better this time - and strokes it past a
diving cover to the fence for his first four.
6.3 Srinath to Hinds, no run, and again, shuffling outside off and
trying to thwack it through cover, but the ball takes the indside
        edge and ricochets onto pad.
6.4 Srinath to Hinds, no run, trying to work it to leg, Hinds gets a
leading edge that spoons into the air on the offside. The mid-off
fielder is stationed just inside the inner circle, and so the ball
        falls short of him!
6.5 Srinath to Hinds, no run, played to cover point.
6.6 Srinath to Hinds, no run, short of a length, seaming away from
Hinds, and the batsman lets that one go past.

End of over 7 (4 runs) West Indies 24/0 (RR: 3.43)
J Srinath 4-0-12-0 (2nb)
CH Gayle 12* (19b 3x4) WW Hinds 8* (25b 1x4)

7.1 Nehra to Gayle, no run, on the legs, and Gayle gets it between a
short midwicket and square leg, but puzzlingly, the single is not
        taken.
7.2 Nehra to Gayle, FOUR, outside the off, nipping back in a touch, and
Gayle gets a thick outside edge that eludes a diving first slip
and runs away to third man for four.
7.3 Nehra to Gayle, FOUR, drifting down the leg, and Gayle works it
easily to fine leg for four more, a gimme, really, after the
        previous good delivery.
7.4 Nehra to Gayle, no run, short of a length, and this time Gayle
tries to hit it through covers. Kaif at cover fields and prevents
        the single.
7.5 Nehra to Gayle, one run, short, and Gayle gets up on his toes and
plays the ball down nicely from the shoulder of his bat, running
it to third man for a single.
7.6 Nehra to Hinds, no run, short of a length, climbing on Hinds, who
plays it down to the legside with soft hands.

End of over 8 (9 runs) West Indies 33/0 (RR: 4.12)
A Nehra 4-0-20-0 (1w)
CH Gayle 21* (24b 5x4) WW Hinds 8* (26b 1x4)

       Srinath to continue.
8.1 Srinath to Gayle, one run, on the legs, and Gayle easily works it
to square leg and sprints the run, the fielder missing the direct
hit as Hinds runs to the striker's end.
8.2 Srinath to Hinds, two runs, Hinds finds the gap, threading the ball
between point and cover. Kaif gives chase and pulls it back inside
        the ropes.
8.3 Srinath to Hinds, OUT: short of a length, on middle stump and
moving sharply away from Hinds, who follows the ball, neither
forward nor back, and gets the edge to VVS Laxman at first slip.
        Srinath strikes!

The in-form Marlon Samuels comes out to the middle.
8.4 Srinath to Samuels, one run, on middle and leg, and Samuels works
it away to leg, getting some bat on the ball and escaping
Srinath's appeal for leg-before being given.
8.5 Srinath to Gayle, no run, on the legs, and Gayle works it to the
        onside.
8.6 Srinath to Gayle, no run, short of a length, and Gayle pushes it
into the offside. Good over from Srinath, a successful one.

J Srinath 5-0-16-1 (2nb)
MN Samuels 1* (1b) CH Gayle 22* (27b 5x4)

9.1 Nehra to Samuels, no run, full, and a nippier delivery from Nehra
at that, and Samuels shoulders arms as the ball moves away with
        the natural angle.
9.2 Nehra to Samuels, one run, on leg stump, easily tucked around the
corner for a single to fine leg.
9.3 Nehra to Gayle, no run, on off stump, Gayle pushes at it to play it
through covers, but the ball does not really come onto the bat and
takes an inside edge, running away to midwicket.
9.4 Nehra to Gayle, FOUR, short ball, and this one comes onto the bat
nicely enough, Gayle standing up tall and powering the ball
through the covers off the back foot, stand-and-deliver stroke.
9.5 Nehra to Gayle, one run, steered to point, just wide of the fielder
there, and the single taken quickly.
9.6 Nehra to Samuels, no run, short of a length, and Samuels gets onto
the back foot and defends back down the track.

10.1 Srinath to Gayle, no run, fullish delivery, and Gayle on the front
        foot defends.
10.2 Srinath to Gayle, no run, on middle and leg again, and Gayle again
pushes it back down the track.
10.3 Srinath to Gayle, no run, stroked into the offside, the pitch
looking like slowing up now, which might prompt a spinner being
        introduced soon enough.
10.4 Srinath to Gayle, FOUR, half volley outside the off, and Gayle
times that one wonderfully, driving with the full flourish of the
bat through the covers for four more.
10.5 Srinath to Gayle, FOUR, half volley again outside the off, and
really, even on the slowest pitch, it's no use bowling that
length, and Gayle shows that by driving yet again through covers
        for four more.
10.6 Srinath to Gayle, no run, super comeback from the Indian fast
bowler, short of a length, faster too, and Gayle probes outside
the off and is beaten as the ball seams away to Dravid.

End of over 11 (8 runs) West Indies 51/1 (RR: 4.64)
J Srinath 6-0-24-1 (2nb)
MN Samuels 2* (4b) CH Gayle 35* (36b 8x4)

11.1 Nehra to Samuels, no run, on the off, seaming away just a touch,
        and Samuels shoulders arms.
11.2 Nehra to Samuels, no run, on the off, driven to mid-on by Samuels.
11.3 Nehra to Samuels, no run, this time driven to short extra cover.
11.4 Nehra to Samuels, no run, steered into the offside, where point
        runs around and fields.
11.5 Nehra to Samuels, no run, steered again to point, tight line from
        Nehra here.
11.6 Nehra to Samuels, FOUR, dropped! Samuels flashes outside the off at
the end of a quiet over, and the ball flies fast to Laxman at
second slip, who bobbles the ball behind him, the pace taking the
ball speedily to the fence at third man.

       Agarkar into the attack now.
12.1 Agarkar to Gayle, no run, short of a length, and Gayle pushes it
        into the off.
12.2 Agarkar to Gayle, FOUR, short of a length, and Gayle goes back -
dangerous when the ball may keep low as it did then - and pulls it
away, the ball running away to fine leg for four.
12.3 Agarkar to Gayle, one run, short ball, climbing on the batsman, and
Gayle tries the pull over square leg, but the ball takes the top
edge and just falls ahead of the square leg fielder for a single.
12.4 Agarkar to Samuels, FOUR, short of a length, and Samuels rocks
back, waits for it, and then smashes it through the covers to the
fence, all the weight on the back foot, strick with great power.
12.5 Agarkar to Samuels, FOUR, short of a length again, and Samuels
repeats the stroke, spanking it through covers almost one-handed
to the fence for four more! Things happening in Agarkar's over
        here.
12.6 Agarkar to Samuels, one run, slower delivery, and Samuels calmly
steers it to third man for the single.

13.1 Nehra to Samuels, one run, pushed into the covers for the single.
13.2 Nehra to Gayle, SIX, short of a length, on the off, and although
the ball does not get up too much, Gayle picks it up with the meat
of the bat and deposits it straight back over the bowler's heads,
onto the tin roofing over the stands for maximum!
13.3 Nehra to Gayle, two runs, drifting down middle and leg, and Gayle
works it easily enough for a couple to square leg.
13.4 Nehra to Gayle, no run, played just wide of short midwicket.
13.5 Nehra to Gayle, no run, short of a length again, and this one
climbs, Gayle getting back almost onto his stumps to play it down
        safely into the offside.
13.6 Nehra to Gayle, one run, a climbing delivery again, Nehra really
putting his back into that one, and Gayle gets on his toes to play
it down but does not succeed, the ball taking the top of the bat
and heading through where first slip should have been for a single
        to third man.

14.1 Agarkar to Gayle, no run, pushed into the offside.
14.2 Agarkar to Gayle, wide: no run, drifting down leg, and Gayle tries
to work it around the corner and misses, the wide signalled.
14.2 Agarkar to Gayle, SIX, short ball and rising on the off, and Gayle
front-foot-pulls it nicely, bludgeoning it from off stump and
sending it flat and fast past the midwicket fence for maximum!
And that is Gayle's fifty off just 46 balls.
14.3 Agarkar to Gayle, one run, pushed with soft hands to point, and a
        quick single taken.
14.4 Agarkar to Samuels, no run, slower ball, outside the off, and
Samuels has a dart at the cut shot and misses out.
14.5 Agarkar to Samuels, no run, fuller, and Samuels drives it straight
to mid-off. India's problems with the bowling continuing at
        Rajkot.
14.6 Agarkar to Samuels, no run, slower ball, and Samuels strokes it to
        cover.

Match State: Drinks

Jai P Yadav now into the bowling attack after the fielding
        restrictions have been removed.
15.1 Yadav to Gayle, no run, full and on the off, and Gayle strokes it
into the covers. The lack of pace immediately showing here, and
the batsmen will find him harder to get away if he sticks to line
        and length.
15.2 Yadav to Gayle, no run, driven powerfully, but straight to mid-off.
15.3 Yadav to Gayle, FOUR, oooh, Gayle drives again straight to mid-off,
but Nehra, pressured as Gayle looks for the single, lets it go
straight through his legs to the long off fence for four. Poor
        fielding.
15.4 Yadav to Gayle, no run, driven with a vertical bat again, right
        back to Yadav.
15.5 Yadav to Gayle, no run, slower delivery, fuller up as well, and
        Gayle pats it to cover.
15.6 Yadav to Gayle, one run, struck just to the right of the new mid-
off fielder - Dinesh Mongia, on for Srinath - who fields well to
        give just the single.

Ganguly brings himself into the attack now, something that hasn't
        been seen for some time.
16.1 Ganguly to Gayle, no run, pushed into the offside.
16.2 Ganguly to Gayle, no run, patted to short extra cover again,
Ganguly operating on the same theory as Yadav viz. less the pace
off the wicket, less the chance of being hit.
16.3 Ganguly to Gayle, no run, straight to short exra cover again, third
ball in a row to that fielder.
16.4 Ganguly to Gayle, one run, on the legs, and Gayle flicks it to long
        on for the single.
16.5 Ganguly to Samuels, OUT: and GoldenArm strikes! Samuels tries to
glide that one, just outside the off, to third man, opening the
face and sliding the ball right into Dravid's gloves, who holds on
        for a fine catch.

17.1 Yadav to Sarwan, FOUR, nicely worked by Sarwan straight back down
the ground, well-timed and just beating the mid-on fielder to race
away to the sightscreen for four, not a great start to the over.
17.2 Yadav to Sarwan, no run, steered to point, where Yuvraj Singh dives
well to his left and prevents the four.
17.3 Yadav to Sarwan, FOUR, a genuine edge induced as Sarwan tries the
cut, the ball speeding between keeper and second slip to the third
        man fence for four more.
17.4 Yadav to Sarwan, no run, pushed down the track, no run.
17.5 Yadav to Sarwan, no run, cut away again, but the ball does not rise
enough for that stroke to come off, the ball bouncing into the
ground and going straight to point.

27.1 Samuels to Sehwag, FOUR, huge hit, very high in the air, Sehwag
hoiking that from outside the off and to the midwicket fence for
four. Some crowd trouble also beginning to manifest itself now,
        unfortunately and puzzlingly.
The Match Referee Mike Procter now coming onto the field to see
what can be done, and the teams walk off the field as the next
course of action is to be decided.
But really, this is a pity, that makes three out of three matches
thus far interrupted by the crowd, and sullying the country's
reputation of being magnificent hosts for cricket.

Match State: Delay - Crowd disturbances

Play remains suspended at the Madhavarao Scindia stadium in Rajkot
as one particular stadium stand is being cleared by the police
after confabulations between security authorities and match
        referee Mike Procter.
That ends the game here at Rajkot, the crowd unable to be subdued
and the match referee having no choice but to apply the Duckworth-
Lewis rules of play and awarding the match to India as a
        consequence.
After 27.1 overs and with one wicket down, India would have needed
120 to satisfy the rules, and since they were almost 80 runs over
that, there was no ambiguity on that front.
But it is still an unfortunate end to what was a good exhibition of
cricket, and although India have won here, they would have much
rather cruised to the target on their own steam rather than
dependong on the crowd and Messrs Duckworth and Lewis.
The Man of the Match, not surprisingly, was awarded to Virender
        Sehwag.
That ends this live coverage of the third one-dayer. Join us on the
15th for the fourth match, a day-nighter from Ahmedabad. Till
        then, good day.
