1st Test: India v England at Mohali, 3-7 Dec 2001
Ball-by-Ball Commentary
[ Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 ]
Match State: Day 1 start scheduled to start at 09:30 local time (04:00 GMT)
Good Morning!
Welcome to Mohali! We are at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium
in Mohali for the first Test match of the three-Test-series to be
played between India and England.
So far, three Test matches have been played at this beautiful
venue, West Indies beat India by 243 runs in the very first Test
match played in Mohali.
The other two Test matches were played against Sri Lanka and then
New Zealand; both were drawn.
Mohali has always helped the fast bowlers; there is always
something on this pitch, for the medium pacers.
Dion Nash (6/27) has the best bowling record. Javagal Srinath
(6/45) has been the most successful bowler for India at this venue
and he will be missed sorely by the Indian team.
Jimmy Adams has made the highest Test score at this venue, an
unbeaten 174.
England and India have so far played 84 Test matches; 43 of those
has been in India.
England has won 32 Test matches and India has got better of the
English on 14 occasions.
Playing in India, the home side holds 11-10 advantage. England have
done much better than the Aussies while playing in India.
The last English victory came in the 1984/85 tour, in the Chennai
Test. David Gower's team taking the series 2-1.
The last time and English team toured India to play a Test series
was in 1992/93; the team led by Graham Gooch lost all three Test
matches.
This English team led by Nasser Hussain have had a good start to
this tour. They have played very positive cricket leading to the
first Test match.
As a matter of fact they pulled off a good win against India 'A' at
Jaipur in their last match.
The English batsmen to watch out in India will be Marcus
Trescothick, Mark Ramprakash and Graham Thorpe. You can never
count on Nasser Hussain, who is a gritty performer.
England will definitely miss their new ball bowlers, Darren Gough
and Andrew Caddick.
India have had a lot of problems lately. All the controversy and
the Test series loss in South Africa is a story of the past.
India have made a lot of changes to their pace attack. In comes the
new players Tinu Yohannan, Iqbal Siddique and Sanjay Bangar,
making their Test debut.
The Toss has been won by India. They will have a bowl first on this
green top!
James Foster, the English wicketkeeper also makes his Test debut

Match State: Lunch - Day 1
England takes the honours of the first session.
This has been a brilliant session of cricket, the willow reigning
supreme over leather. The ball has sped past the ropes some 20
times in the first two hours.
Sourav Ganguly won the toss and elected to field first. He had
three new medium pacers, Yohannan, Siddiqui and Bangar. This is
not the time to question the wisdom ofthe selectors dropping th
elikes of Nehra and Zaheer and also a certain Ajit Agarkar.
The tall fast bowler from Kochi, tinu Yohannan gave India some
early hope by claimin gthe wicket of Butcher, caught by Laxman at
second slip.
Butcher has been struggling on this tour so far and one wonders
whether he will regain it before the Test series ends.
Trescothick must have watched a lot of video tapes of another tall
left handed batsman Matthew Hayden, who had a roaring success in
India. Tresco has done well to crack 11 fours in his 55 not out
Hussain has been troubled a bit now and then, he has held on to
make 44 not out, playing some spanking square cuts
Anil Kumble has been a major disappointment, his six overs costing
35 runs.
The body language of the Indian team has not been one of
confidence, which augurs well for the visitors.
India will have to come out and play positive cricket.
We would like to test your knowledge of this wonderful game. Kindly
send us an email with the correct answer to this query:
Who was the first Indian to score a century against England on his

Match State: Innings Break
England all out for 238 in 76.3 overs. After tea England lost its
way completely, making just 31 runs and losing six wickets.
Harbhajan Singh 5/51 has easily been the best bowler. Kumble too
has bowled well, after going for 35 runs off his first six overs,
he has comeback well to pick two wickets
giving away just 17 runs off his next 13 overs
There has been a lot of positives about this Indian bowling, apart
from the two spinners, Tinu Yohannan also bowled very well.
The English batting collapse was spectacular indeed. more on that
after close of play.

Match State: Stumps - Day 1
262 runs and 11 wickets on the first day.
This was after Ganguly won the toss and elected to bowl, on a pitch
which has a fair amount of grass.
India went in with three debutants and England two.
Tinu Yohannan was given the new ball and picked up the wicket of
Butcher with the fourth ball of the morning.
Yohannan is a product of the MRF pace academy, where Dennis Lillee
works with the young trainees.
England did well to go in to lunch at 107/1, Trescothick looking
very confident and good for a big knock. Husssain gave him good
support. Runs kept flowing in the morning session.
The field placing was not too impressive as the ball kept racing
past the ropes at third-man
Ganguly seemed to be quite upset with the kind of bowlers he had in
his team. All that was soon forgotten. Trescothick and Hussain had
looked very dangerous from an Indian point of view, adding 125
runs for the second wicket
It was the young fast bowler from Kochi, Yohannan, who struck
again. Trescothick left a ball go through, the ball straightened
on him and sent the off stump flying. That was a spectacular
sight.
Yohannan bowled a brilliant first ball to Thorpe, a slow full toss,
which Courtney Walsh has used so efficiently against this left-
handed batsman.
Thorpe played all around the low full toss. That would have been
given out, if not for the no ball!
Siddiqui picked up his maiden Test wicket by removing Thorpe.
Hussain played on bravely, hitting a massive six on his way to make
85, before he was given out, caught bat pad
England went in to Tea at 207/4 and in the final session, the most
dreaded thing happened again, their batting collapsed
spectacularly to lose six wickets for just 31 runs.
The damage was done by who else... the Turbanator! Harbhajan Singh
5/51. he is on a hat-trick and could well make it in the second
innings. He already has a hat-trick, the one he got against
Australia!
Kumble too bowled well to finish with 2/52
England were scorong at nearly 5 runs per an over before lunch were
bowled out for 238 off 76.3 overs.
The English bowlers were guilty of not making the batsmen play too
often, Das and dasgupta happy to leave the harmless deliveries
alone.
leaving th eball alone was what SS Das did to an incutter from Mark
Butcher to see his off stump knocked back.
India are 24/1 at close of day-1.
This has been a wonderful day's cricket at the beautiful Mohali.
Thanks to ICC and BCCI, all issues were resolved and we have the
Test series on. No wonder this game endures... and entertains.
