Date-stamped : 17 Feb95 - 10:37 NZ Centenary ODI Tournament: Match #2 India v New Zealand, McLean Park, Napier, 16 February 1995. Skipper Ken Rutherford held four valuable catches to help New Zealand beat India at the Centenary Tournament yesterday and end a 16-game streak of defeats. New Zealand, now unbeaten in six games on Napier`s McLean Park, won the match by four wickets. Rutherford won the toss and made the Indians bat. Led by Navjot Sidhu`s 73, India were all out for 160 in 45 overs. Rutherford`s four catches equalled New Zealand`s one-day catching record, while Danny Morrison had figures of 3-22 and Chris Cairns, returning from a long injury break, notched up an economical 1-17. New Zealand always looked as if they would win although there were some nervy moments. The first came on 44, when openers Mark Greatbatch and Martin Crowe were both out. In the 29th over, with New Zealand cruising at 3-144, Cairns was caught by Mohammed Azharuddin off Javagal Srinath. Shane Thomson came out and the same combination sent him back to the stand for a duck. Srinath then inflicted the same embarrassment on Adam Parore and New Zealand were 6-144. But Stephen Fleming held his ground and eventually steered New Zealand home to 6-162 in the 32nd over, collecting an undefeated 59 on the way. Srinath was the best of the Indians with 4-52. Rutherford takes a diving catch short mid wicket. * Kambli with his foot not going across driving the ball away from the body with the slanted bat (of which Jadeja is accused of) - a catch to Rutherford at short cover. * Manoj Prabhakar hung around very sketchily (2 of 12 balls) and flicked a full toss to Rutherford at short mid wicket. * Mongia, in a predetermined fashion came down the wicket, lofted the ball of the top of the bat to Greatbatch at short mid-off (short cover). * Sidhu, clearly under pressure to accelerate, drove one uppish- ly and powerfully on the onside - Rutherford in a soccer goalie style leaped up and came up with a fantastic left-handed catch. * Srinath hit the ball straight to Greatbatch and ran and got a direct hit. * Venkatesh Prasad got declared lbw. I thought the ball had in-swung enough and cut in to be going down the leg-side. Not that he would have made a difference. * Raju played a fantastic defensive shot (a la Malcolm) and got bowled by an in-swinging yorker from Morrison. * Kumble remained not out.
