Ray Jennings, the Royal Challengers Bangalore coach, has called for a window for the IPL, saying that missing players due to international matches makes it tougher to build team spirit.

Bangalore will be without their most expensive player, Kevin Pietersen, for the first couple of weeks of the IPL. New Zealand's Ross Taylor, whose big-hitting is one of the side's strengths, will be busy with the Tests against Australia till the end of March, and Australian allrounder Steven Smith's selection in the Test squad also deprives Bangalore of his services till early April.

"With so much international cricket being played in between the IPL, it becomes difficult for any franchise to gel as a team," Jennings wrote on the team's official website. "As a result, it is difficult to target all the players together at the start of the tournament. I think there should be some window for the IPL for all the players to meet and gel as a unit before the start of such an important tournament."

Jennings felt that the coming IPL season will see larger totals being made because players have more experience in Twenty20. "Par score is beginning to grow because of the knowledge of how to play the game," he said. "I think the par score will be around 155 - 170. But we don't want to set our targets very high. We want to assess the situation, and be flexible with the targets."

The squad has been practising at the Chinnaswamy Stadium since the beginning of last week, starting with some of the Indian players, with more team members joining since. On Tuesday, Indian medium-pacer Praveen Kumar and South African allrounder Roelof van der Merwe were the latest players to become part of the camp.

I completely agree with Cric_analyst's comments. Am really tired of people just making comments of IPL. It's fine each have their opinion. But welcome to real world. IPL is the biggest cricketing event in the world and no one can deny that. Also come on, people crib so much that it goes on for 6 week! give me a break, our english premier league or any football league in the world keep playing week in and week out for 10 months! add to that carling cup, FA cup, champions league and the list is endless and the same people don't complain against this!! This is a sporting event that needs to be applauded and taken forward and celebrated. I for one will watch it and enjoy it!!

@sifter132 - Seems ppl have a prob with the IPL ?? Lets see how much water your argument holds ... Is 32 the no. of intl players involved with the IPL ?? No !!! Total number of international players contracted with the IPL is 78 (Bangalore-11, Mumbai- 9, Chennai-10, Hyderabad-8, Kolkata-10, Delhi-10, Rajasthan-10 and Punjab-10). Add to this the coaches and support staff, physios, analysts, technicians, etc. Except world events, no tournament in the world even comes close to this in terms of no. of intl. world class pros involved. Not to forget that they make more money in the IPL than anywhere else. Also, the IPL is the most anticipated and has the highest audience viewership (much more than intls like Aus vs NZ ... lol). It is an Indian event but on a global scale and has more money involved than any other tournament. If a tournament of this magnitude doesnt deserve a 7 week window, I wonder what does ?

Look guys, this things coming from the Coach of RCB. this is big worry for us to reach a target. i am thinking of 2008 result. anyway such a bad thinking. It should not happen again in 2010.

Well, calling for a window for just a domestic league, even one as big as the IPL, seems a bit foolish. What could be done, is to try and minimise the clashes, but no more than that.

Boo frickety hoo Ray! Everyone else has the same problem and this is something you should be taking into account when building your team. The IPL is an INDIAN tournament where 7 of the 11 players must be Indian. That leaves 4 internationals across 8 teams who are playing. You want to stop ALL international cricket for the sake of these 32 players?? That's selfish. The World Cup? Yeah, THAT deserves a window. The IPL is a domestic tournament, so unless Modi wants to allow more international players onto the park it is NOT deserving of holding world cricket to ransom.
