Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, has hinted that the Twenty20 tournament could be held twice a year, once in India and a shorter one overseas.

"The IPL will be based in India, but the second season (of a year) we are planning gives us the chance to see if a market exists and we are seriously looking at what we can do with it," he told the Daily Telegraph.

He said he had been encouraged by the response from fans in South Africa, where the IPL was shifted for the 2009 season due to concerns over security as the competition clashed with general elections in India. "We have turned the challenges and adversities in moving to South Africa into an opportunity," he said. "It is fans who determine if you are successful or not and they have come out in force here. It has shown that the tournament can be in any region, in any country. This opens up many different opportunities for us."

The USA, where the ICC has advised cricket officials to install an IPL-style Twenty20 league, is one of the countries Modi considers a potential host. "America throws up challenges but the format we have developed works," he said. "Apart from watching great cricket they have an enjoyable evening out. That will work anywhere.

"Before this tournament we did not know if we could do it. But we do know now. We have to satisfy an appetite across the world and build a fan base across the world. "

The IPL and the huge money it offers players has had many worrying about the primacy of Test cricket, and West Indies captain Chris Gayle's comments earlier this month that he "wouldn't be so sad" if Tests vanished in favour of Twenty20s had sparked a furore.

There have already been several demands for a window in the official calendar to accommodate the IPL, and the rise of Twenty20 is set to continue with the launch of tournaments in England, and another involving players from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

i rekon they can have like one home game of each team at a different stadium abroad. that way its taken to another country and still have the home and away thing. but 2 IPLs just a terrible idea. or have like a IPL-light vs IPL-dark side where the top players of IPL (not restricted to the 4 fouriegners per team) play a 3 match series in a country abroad.

One day we will look back at these days and remember them as END OF DAYS of Cricket. I am sure Gilchrist must have cheered this moment more than winning worldcups with Australia (he might not admit on face, but the fact most of players are willing to get retired from international duties for IPL supports my statement). Everytime good cricketers play cricket it is always memorable, the quantity destroys the quality!!! noone remembers how, who won the matches last year....everyone still talks about ASHES because of the rare competition you watch....perfect war between ball and bat comes after years of waiting and that too happens for few matches. Kolkata Knight Riders lost last year with the body language "no worries we will win next year" ....and this year they left with same body language because they all get paid well and noone cares!!! Modi is talking about two IPLs now GOD SAVE CRICKET's original lovely format True battle between ball and bat.... where bowlers had some respect

50 overs cricket needs to be dumped and replaced with test cricket and these club/state T20 cricket competions. The one dayers have become very predictable and boring. T20 is really like a refined form of 50 ovrs cricket removing all the boring stuff from it. I hope test cricket will never loose its fan following , its so great and beautiful. So Mr MOdi go with 2 IPLs an year , but do that at the expense of one dayers and not test cricket.

Two IPL tourneys in one year would cause long term effects on the other formats of this beautiful game of cricket. I follow TEST MATCH CRICKET more closely than i do follow this mini format of the game. Iam looking forward to the Ashes more than the T20 County Matches. Yes, 50-50 is important but talk about the primacy of TEST CRICKET and you are diluting it by talking AGAIN about having an window for IPL in the already packed International Calendar...!! Can the IPL teams play Test Cricket with a shorter format of course?? I would like to see who comes out in flying colours...?!?!?!?

IPL twice a year! It is going to be too much to bear. IPL once a year, T20 world cup once every two years and then Champions League and not to mention the least, test matches in between is good enough. May be the time to say goodbye to one day international and the one-day world cup has arrived. Let it be sooner rather than later.

Look it is good for making money but it is not good for game and players

Talk about killing the goose that lays the golden egg. Oh well, Modi has never been anything more than a businessmen with the sole intention of profit maximization.

I don't think 2009 IPL brought in the same intensity as last year's. Missing the main concept of home away basis was the main reason. The tournament seemed to be bit long and boring. The home and away concept makes it look interesting. 2 season could be bit too much, could be that they can make it a knock out tounament out of it. But already we have the Champions league. With all the international schedule, I think we will cut the golden hen.
