Two uncapped players, left-hand middle-order batsman Thilina Kandamby and wicketkeeper-batsman Kaushal Silva, have been named in Sri Lanka's Test squad for the tour of India starting next month. Another major change in the 16-man line-up for the three-Test series was a recall for left-arm fast bowler Chanaka Welegedera after a two-year absence from the senior side. The notable absentees are opener Malinda Warnapura and middle-order batsman Chamara Kapugedera.
Kandamby has made it to the Test squad on the strength of his exceptional one-day form. Since his recall to the one-day side last year, Kandamby has been one of Sri Lanka's consistent performers scoring 618 runs from 17 ODIs at an average of 44.14 including five half-centuries.
Silva is highly rated by captain Kumar Sangakkara, who once said that it was the presence of the world's best Test wicketkeeper in the side, Prasanna Jayawardene, that was keeping Silva on the sidelines. A right-hand middle order batsman Silva has been a prolific scorer for Sinhalese Sports Club in the domestic circuit and captained Sri Lanka A against Pakistan A early this year.
Welegedera, 28, played his only Test against England at Galle in 2007 where he took four wickets for 76 and was hailed as the likely successor to Sri Lanka's most successful fast bowler, Chaminda Vaas. However, Welegedera failed to live up to the high expectations and faded out of contention until last season when he came back strongly with some inspiring bowling performances for Wayamba in the provincial tournament to stake a claim for a place in the Test side.
Welagedera also gets a nod in for the two Twenty20s along with hard-hitting Chintaka Jayasinghe and Kaushalya Weeraratne and allrounder Muthumudalige Pushpakumara. For the five one-day internationals, fast bowler Dilhara Fernando has been recalled.

The tst squad is fine as it is. Same side thats been winning lately, and got us up to no.2. Although, i feel murali n herath should play tests until murali retires after which mendis can be 2nd spinner(only 5 more tests that he'd miss). Maharoof shouldnt hav been dropped when he was, but now i think hes just lost his form a bit, couldnt possibly replace kula, thushara or malinga. Sanath should still opn in t20s 'cause hes your best bet to make full use of pwrplay.

Posted by dulith2 on (November 02 2009, 09:35 AM GMT)sri lanka test team need more young power.we saw how important to have youngesters from the innigs of angelo mathews at last test match vs pakistan. so do concern about dinesh chandimal whos perforiming well in sri lanka domestic cricket. his batting average is above 60 in this season. prasanna jayawardana should develop his batting average. if we compare dinesh and prasanna we can come to an conclution easyly that dinesh is better
Posted by auggie on (November 02 2009, 08:30 AM GMT)SL have an excellent spinner (Possible allrounder) in Suraj Randiv (formerly S.Mohamed) but he is not included despite fine international and domestic performances. He is 24. Áre the SL selectors waiting until he is 32 or more to give him a test slot? SL should justify their much promoted hype about giving talented youngsters a chance and include Suraj!

They are the best judges and possess in-depth knowledge on the players. However, as we have seen and experienced the dramatic sensations that took place within SLC, especially where "money" is concerned, things could turn sour. Even though, there is another possibility of "biased opinions" being adopted for selfish gains within SLC executives, money-making motives must be stopped in order for SLC to progress further. Jehan Mubarak has been dropped for reasons best known to the chiefs and captain.

He is the fastest bowler we have and not been selected. Come on guys, Kumar, Malinga needs guidance. I have spoken to Malinga few times recently and he feels our team does not need him. Our players need intelligence and motivation. Most come from various life styles and they need guidance. I hope someone has patience and encourage them so they could perform better.
Posted by slchinthy on (October 30 2009, 17:08 PM GMT)why not give chances to young players like chandimal and amal atulatmudali who performed really well in domestic level why selectors r giving chances again and again to guys like upul and mubarak? nowadays when new batsman comes to the team his age is around 30(kandamby) this is not been the case earlier selectors had faith in young players back then and produced great players like sanath,aravinda,murali .... surely what srilanka need is to replace de mel with aravinda at least he can select those talented cricketers like chandimal(who averages over 50 in domestic) to the side

What is the correct decision is maharoof should get the chance to play T20 and ODIs... In this case selectors can easily take both Mathews and Maharoof for T20s.. can u tell me who are the pinch hitters in the side??? Obviously jayasuriya, Dilshan and no doubt the 3rd one is maharoof... so he should be given chances to play T20s at least...
Posted by fawazdeen on (October 30 2009, 07:18 AM GMT)I agree with you completely Mr.Samarawickrawickrama I firmly believe that as Marvan had lots of cricket left him but unfortunately due to the fact that jokers (as Marven called which is completely correct) are in the top as selectors we are loosing few good players whom really deserve a chance. I really feel Maharoof is one of them. He can give a lot to Sri Lankan cricket. Recent, match he player, he scored 41 and 115 respectively in two innings. And only the few overs he bowled (18 overs) in both innings he took three wickets.
