BCCI files police complaint against Modi

N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, has lodged a complaint with the Chennai police against Lalit Modi alleging criminal misappropriation of the board's funds worth Rs 470 crore (approximately US$105 million). Chennai police commissioner T Rajendran said Srinivasan had "preferred a police complaint" against Modi, mainly relating to the allotment of media rights and free commercial rights.

He said there were three main charges in what he called a detailed complaint. It was filed in Chennai because the BCCI is registered in that city.

Modi's lawyer Mehmood Abdi told ESPNcricinfo that he had not seen the charges yet, but said a police complaint was totally unnecessary and expressed surprise that it had been lodged in Chennai. "When the BCCI filed criminal charges against [former board president] Jagmohan Dalmiya, the cases were heard in the Mumbai court. It [Chennai] is the home town of the secretary and that seems to be the reason."

Modi is already the subject of a blue corner alert issued by the Enforcement Directorate, a department of the finance ministry in Delhi that handles allegations of financial irregularity. Modi has denied receiving the notice, which makes it mandatory for law-enforcement agencies around the world to detain him wherever they spot him and inform the ED accordingly.

The complaint filed by Srinivasan is the latest in a series of moves by the BCCI to undo decisions and deals carried out by Modi when he was IPL chairman. The latest move was to expel two IPL franchises over issues of their ownership.
