Modi committed 'major irregularities' - Farooq Abdullah

IPL governing council member Farooq Abdullah has said that the body had "found out major irregularities" committed by suspended IPL chairman Lalit Modi during his time at the helm of the league.

Talking to reporters after the governing council meeting on Friday, Abdullah said "the various problems that IPL has gone through were put forward and decisions were taken. We found out major irregularities that have been committed by the past chairman and discussed what will be done and how we would proceed further."

According to Abdullah, it was after the second team auction, when the Kochi and Pune franchises were added, that the governing council became convinced Modi was influencing the process in an unfair way. "We hope that people would come to know much more as to what has transpired in various things," he said. "How various franchisees were added and how irregularities were done."

The case against Modi will now be heard at the BCCI's Special General Body meeting on July 3. In addition, Modi's counter allegations against board secretary N. Srinivasan will also be discussed. "Whatever charges and counter-charges have been made, the BCCI has a mechanism whereby the General Body would meet," Abdullah said. "Mr Modi has made a number of charges but I think many of these things would be cleared when the committee meets."

In a statement put out by the board, Srinivasan said all the issues relating to Modi were discussed at the meeting. "The members were briefed about the three show-case notices issued to Mr Lalit K Modi and his replies." The charges against Modi include financial irregularities related to rigging of franchise bids and theatrical rights, as well conspiring to create a "rebel" Twenty20 league in England.
