Ranji Trophy Plate League, semi-finals, 2nd day

Assam fight back after Mohanty five-for

Cricinfo staff

January 11, 2007

Orissa 186 for 7 (Behera 57) trail Assam 235 (Mohanty 5-66) by 49 runs
Scorecard

Pritam Das enjoyed a debut to remember, pocketing three wickets and bringing Assam back into the contest in the semi-final at Cuttack. Resuming on 209 for 6 overnight, Assam folded for 235, with Debasis Mohanty (5-66) being the wrecker in chief. Assam's new-ball bowlers Das and Dhiraj Goswami, though, helped them claw back into the match. Niranjan Behera resisted with a doughty 57 but the rest couldn't convert starts into a substantial score. Halhadar Das, with a painstaking 39 off 186 deliveries, stemmed the rot towards the end of the day.

Himachal Pradesh 151 for 3 (Sandeep Sharma 68*) trail Railways 229 (TP Singh 54, Bhatia 6-57) by 78 runs
Scorecard

A stodgy unbeaten 68 by captain Sandeep Sharma put Himachal Pradesh on course to gaining a valuable first-innings lead against Railways at Dharamsala. Himachal crawled to 151 for 3 in 84 overs, intent on building partnerships and preserving wickets, after wrapping up Railways for 229.

Sharma's innings consumed 268 balls, sharing useful stands with opener Manish Gupta (46), Paras Dogra (49) and an unbeaten 41 with Barun Sharma. Sanjay Bangar, Ritam Kundu and Tejinder Pal Singh were the wicket-takers, but Jai Prakash Yadav and Murali Kartik toiled for 20 overs each and failed to pick up any wickets. While Railways managed to keep the runs in check, what they urgently require is early wickets on the third day if they are to retain any chance of winning the game.
