Ranji Trophy Plate division, 1st round, 1st day Yashpal's century gives Services the advantage November 23, 2006
Railways 218 for 5 (JP Yadav 58*) v Madhya Pradesh Madhya Pradesh restricted Railways to 218 for 5 on the first day of their Ranji Trophy Plate match at the Karnail Singh Stadium in Delhi. TP Sudhindra struck two quick blows after Madhya Pradesh chose to bowl and added Sanjay Bangar to his kitty to reduce Railways to 93 for 4. Jai P Yadav led the fightback with an unbeaten 58 and received support from Raja Ali and Sushant Manjrekar who scored 26 and 24 not out respectively.
Services 249 for 3 (Yashpal 112*, Verma 60*) v Orissa Yashpal Singh's unbeaten 112 gave Services the upper hand against Orissa at Cuttack. Services were in trouble after they chose to bat when they lost their first three wickets for 85 runs. However, Yashpal and Sanjay Verma added 164 runs for the fourth wicket and kept the Orissa bowlers at bay for the rest of the day. Services ended the day on 249 for 3 with Yashpal and Verma, batting on 60, still at the crease.
Kerala 219 for 6 (Nair 56*) v Vidarbha Sreekumar Nair's unbeaten 56 steered Kerala to 219 for 6 against Vidarbha at Fort Maidan in Palakkad. Kerala were reduced to 124 for 5 after choosing to bat before Nair held the innings together with Vipin Lal who made 38. Vidarbha used as many as eight bowlers and Chandrashekhar Atram was the pick of them, taking 3 for 36 in 15.1 overs.
Himachal Pradesh 289 for 8 (Gupta 74, Dogra 68) v Jharkhand Half-centuries from Manish Gupta and Paras Dogra took Himachal Pradesh to 289 for 8 against Jharkhand at Dharamsala. Himachal had a solid opening stand of 68 before losing 3 for 5. Gupta and Dogra shared a fourth-wicket stand of 101 but after Dogra fell for 68 they lost wickets at regular intervals. Sumit Panda, Shankar Rao and Shahbaz Nadeem took two wickets each for Jharkhand.
Jammu & Kashmir 64 for 3 trail Tripura 156 by 92 runs Jammu & Kashmir routed Tripura for 156 but were themselves in a precarious position at 64 for 3 on the first day at Agartala. Vijay Sharma was outstanding, finishing with 3 for 12 off 14 overs. He was supported well by Abid Nabi who also picked up three wickets. Rajib Saha top-scored for Tripura with 51. Tripura regained some lost ground by taking three wickets for two runs after the openers had added 44.
Assam 38 for 1 trail Goa 134 (Katti 5-25) by 96 runs A five-wicket haul from Anand Katti, the veteran left-arm spinner, helped Assam bundle out Goa for a paltry 134 on the first day at Guwahati. Goa's decision to bat first appeared to be a good one initially - when they were comfortably perched at 77 for 1 - but Katti cleaned up the middle order with a fine 5 for 25 in 18 overs.
