Scorecard
Naeemuddin Aslam's maiden first-class hundred bolstered the United Arab Emirates on the first day of their Intercontinental Shield match against Uganda at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. He finished unbeaten on 120 as UAE went to stumps on 314 for 9, aided by Khurram Khan's 87.
Uganda's decision to field after winning the toss this morning paid immediate dividends, as Dennis Tabby had opener Arfan Haider caught behind in his first over with just five runs on the board. Khurram, UAE's captain, and Arshad Ali consolidated with a 74-run partnership to steady UAE but Uganda picked up wickets at regular intervals to stay on an equal footing.
Frank Nsubuga was the pick of Uganda's bowlers today, picking up three wickets in 23 overs of offspin, while Tabby and Ronald Ssemanda contributed with two wickets apiece to peg UAE back. Nsubuga's dismissal of Saqib Ali, trapped lbw, brought Naeemuddin to the crease and he added 73 with his captain before Khurram hit a return catch back at Tabby to be sent back to the pavilion 13 runs shy of his century. Significant contributions from the lower order allowed UAE to edge past 300, but Uganda will also be pleased with their performance in the field.
