Wright doubtful after net injury

Dimitri Mascarenhas has been called into the England squad for the fifth one-day international against Australia at Trent Bridge after Luke Wright became the latest player to injure himself at training. Wright was struck on the left toe while facing a bowling machine at Loughborough on Monday and required stitches to the wound. He will be assessed ahead of Tuesday's match in Nottingham before a decision is made on his availability.

England are currently trailing 4-0 in the series and facing the prospect of an unprecedented whitewash at the hands of Australia. Wright had been charged with injecting life into the middle order, but his results have been mixed so far with scores of 38, 20, 9 and 12. He has also taken three wickets with his medium-pacers.

Mascarenhas has not played an ODI for England since posting a duck against the West Indies at Edgbaston in May. Wright has since usurped him as England's preferred middle-order dasher and middle-over container, however the injury sustained on Monday might again open the door for Mascharenhas. The Hampshire all-rounder blasted 43 from 29 deliveries during the Pro40 match against Somerset on Sunday; authority England's batsman have failed to impose upon the Australians over the past fortnight.

England's squad is already depleted with Paul Collingwood and James Anderson being rested. Graeme Swann was omitted for the fourth ODI at Lord's, while Graham Onions is still awaiting his first one-day cap having been called up earlier in the series.

Wright becomes the second England player to have injured himself at training this series. Joe Denly missed the first three matches against Australia after being brought down in a heavy tackle by Owais Shah during an intra-squad football match prior to the first ODI. England team management have since barred players from playing football during warm-ups.
