Australia's bowlers were unable to mop up the tail and England eventually reached 435
Phillip Hughes got Australia off to a quick start before lunch
Hughes made 36 but was rattled by Andrew Flintoff's short-pitched attack before nicking one
Flintoff dropped a tough chance off Simon Katich when he was on 10
Katich stayed steady at the other end thereafter and reached 50 before tea
Ricky Ponting also found form and shared a half-century partnership with Katich
Ponting also reached 50 and helped convert the partnership with Katich into a century stand
