England's hunt for match-winning spinners will break new ground on Sunday with the start of the ECB's first 'spin match' at the County Ground in Derby. The two-day match, run under the guidance of David Parsons, the ECB spin bowling coach, will feature a crop of young spinners against some of the most promising young batsmen.

Adil Rashid, the Yorkshire legspinner, will be the major attraction but Mark Lawson, his fellow legspinner at Headingley, is required by the county for a Pro40 match. Michael Munday from Somerset, Moeeb Iqbal of Durham and Lancashire's Simon Marshall are the other legspinners who will have a chance to impress.

The players will tackle a range of match-based scenarios designed to test and develop some of the most promising spin bowlers in the first-class system. Parsons will provide coaching over the two-day programme as well as being assisted by Ashley Giles along with the former England spinner John Childs. Andy Flower (batting) and Paul Farbrace (wicketkeeping) will also provide coaching in conjunction with Peter Moores, the ECB National Academy Director, and the England Under-17 coach John Abrahams.

Parsons is excited by the new idea: "This unique programme is specifically geared towards spin bowling with no seam bowlers involved. It has been devised to help develop an enhanced understanding of the tactical considerations associated with various aspects of spin bowling. The programme is based around several scenarios over the two days that simulate match-based situations in an attempt to create a realistic environment for bowlers, batsman and wicketkeepers alike.

"This is the first time a programme of this nature has been staged and we expect to take a great deal of player profiling from the event which will in turn assist our ongoing spin bowling programs on a county level and within the ECB's National Academy."
