Steve Harmison has been ruled out of the Natwest Series as a precaution after not responding to treatment for soreness in his lower back.
Harmison didn't play in the Twenty20 against Pakistan, at Bristol, and had reported some pain during the final Test at The Oval. An ECB statement said that no decision has been made on a replacement for the five-match one-day series, which starts in Cardiff on Wednesday.
This isn't the first injury scare Harmison has suffered this summer. He returned early from the tour of India with shin splints and missed the Test series against Sri Lanka. Then, at Old Trafford against Pakistan, he appeared to tweak his side on the second evening but it proved a false alarm and he helped bowl England to victory.
