Michael Soper resigns as Surrey chairman

Michael Soper has resigned his position as chairman of Surrey following his election as vice-chairman of the ECB and chairman of the First Class Forum. David Stewart, treasurer of the county for the past six years was elected to succeed him at last nights meeting of the club's General Committee - effective from April 15th 2003.

Soper has been chairman of the club for eight years. He took over in difficult circumstances in 1995 since when Surrey have won seven trophies in seven years. In the last five years the club's financial position has become strong and secure. The General Committee have recommended that he be made an honorary life vice-president of the club.

Michael Soper said: "It has been a wonderful eight years - full of real challenges. I trust that much of my experience will help me in my new position at the ECB. I am delighted that I will continue to be involved at Surrey, and want to thank the committee, staff, members and everyone at the club who have supported me. The club is most fortunate to have David Stewart as it's next chairman - a man of immense wisdom, experience and integrity, who will lead the club through it's redevelopment plans."

David Stewart said: "Mike has brought great leadership and commitment to this job - and he will be a hard act to follow. I look forward tremendously to working with everyone at the club who, collectively, make such a great team."
