Graham Thorpe, England's skipper in the One-Day Internationals against Sri Lanka, knows his side must repeat the heroics of the Test team if they are to win the series.

England lost by five wickets, despite an unbeaten 62 from Thorpe himself, to go 1-0 down in the series - just like the Test team did before they came back to take the series 2-1.

Thorpe said: "We're going to be one-nil down but there's no point in being worried about it. We'll just have to fight back and show a bit of spirit like we did in the Test series.

"It's unfortunate that we haven't played as well today. We just didn't post a big enough score with which to test Sri Lanka," he said on Sky Sports.

"We tried hard, they (the opening bowlers) put a great effort in and charged in, but if you only make 140-odd in a one-day game it's not really enough."

Meanwhile Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya was delighted with his team's display.

He said: "We played really well. I think the bowlers did well and I'm very happy because we badly needed a win.

"I thought (Nuwan) Zoysa and (Chaminda) Vaas bowled really well from the start and Murali and (Indika) de Saram bowled well."
