Denness named as Kent's new chairman

Following the Annual General Meeting of Kent County Cricket Club on Monday 5 March 2001, the newly-elected General Committee appointed Mike Denness as Kent's new Chairman of Cricket. He succeeds Derek Ufton, who this year became the Club's President.

Mike Denness played his first game for Kent in 1962 and was Kent's captain from 1972 to 1976. Under his captaincy Kent won the John Player League three times, the Benson and Hedges Cup twice and the Gillette Cup once. He played in 28 Test Matches and captained England for 19 of them. He recorded 25,886 runs in his first-class career (including 33 centuries) and took 411 catches.

He has served on Kent County Cricket Club committees since 1989 and is an Honorary Life Member of the Club. He is also an Honorary Member of The Lord's Taverners and MCC and is a trustee of The Torch Trophy Trust. He is Chairman of the ECB Pitches Advisory Group, a member of the ECB Cricket Advisory Committee and an ICC match referee.

Commenting on his appointment, Mike Denness said: "I am delighted and honoured to be taking on the role of Chairman of Cricket and am committed to working with John Inverarity and Matthew Fleming to bring success to the County."
