Like his father, David, Andy Bairstow was not a natural wicketkeeper but he did stand-in when the occasion demanded. His main strength was as a batsman, but his first-class opening came when Derbyshire needed a keeper and selected Bairstow, then only 19-year-old and with a handful of 2nd XI games behind him. He did adequately with the gloves but failed with the bat. Either side of his brief spell with Derbyshire he played second-team cricket for Worcestershire, Somerset and Sussex.
