A competent wicketkeeper who made occasional appearances for the MCC, Worcestershire and Shropshire, Alfred Archer toured South Africa with Lord Hawke's team in 1898-99, and played a single Test - batting No. 10, and not keeping wicket or bowling when Bromley-Davenport was indisposed. He made a useful 24* in the second innings, the highlight of a career so undistinguished that he wasn't good enough to make the XI while at school at Haileybury.
