An opening bat and former England Under-19 captain, Arran Brindle smashed the world record for the opening stand in a Test with Caroline Atkins in Lucknow, India, in January (2002) as she reached her then-highest Test score of 85. She surpassed this in 2005 in the first Test against Australia at Hove, when she made her first Test hundred to save England from defeat and so enable them to go on and win the Ashes.
She played boys' cricket for Thornton-in-Craven from the age of 12 and has also played football and tennis. Brindle won local council Best Sportsperson Award in 1998 for her county and national selection. She studied PE and Sports Science at Loughborough University, graduating in 2003 and was married the same year.
In June 2006 she stunned her colleagues by announcing a temporary retirement to enable her to spend more time with her family.
