Will Beer was rewarded for his efforts coming through the Sussex Academy with a deal at the end of 2007. Beer, a talented legspinner, needs to be given time to flourish according to Mark Robinson, Sussex's manager, but now has the chance to do so since the retirement of Mushtaq Ahmed. In 2008 he impressed for England Under-19s in the Test series against new Zealand, taking 10 wickets at 17.10, and got another two-year deal with Sussex at the end of the summer. It was at the 2009 Twenty20 finals day that he really caught the eye, with a nerveless performance in the final to help Sussex to the title. He is mentored by Terry Jenner and in 2009 was part of the ECB's elite spin-bowling programme. Time is certainly on his side.
