William Smith is one of a small number of cricketers to have represented Yorkshire without being born in the county. His early club cricket was with Darlington and Middlesbrough, but he moved south in the 1860s and made his county debut in 1865, bagging a pair and failing to do much in subsequent appearances. In 1867 he turned out twice, both times against Lancashire, and in the first game he made 60 and then 90 in the second. His further appearances were irregular, the last being in 1874, and while he carried on representing Middlesbrough, all traces of him as a cricketer end in 1876.
