A talented middle-order batsman and useful offspin bowler, Rory Hamilton-Brown made his debut for Surrey against Bangladesh A in 2005, but was his 2008 move to Sussex that revived a career that was threatening to fizzle out.
He made his second XI debut in 2004 as a 16-year-old, scoring 84 against Sussex, and was selected for the England Under-19 tour of Bangladesh. Although a dreadfully disappointing tour for England, who lost all 11 matches, Hamilton-Brown performed well enough to earn a place at the Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka in February 2006.
He was named England U-19 captain for the 2006-07 winter tour of Malaysia, but couldn't play because of shoulder surgery - and then was on the brink of skippering them in the first Test against Pakistan in summer 2007, but was banned on the eve of the first Test then reinstated for the second.
A talented sportsman, he also played rugby union for Harlequins and England juniors and broke the batting record Millfield aged 16. Dennis Amiss is his godfather.
