Born in South Africa, Jade Dernbach became Surrey's youngest debutant for 30 years when he played against India A in 2003. In 2005 he was thrust into the spotlight when selected to play against Lancashire in the semi-final of the Twenty20 cup. With figures of 0 for 52, he was clearly under prepared. He was given further chances in the limited overs league but looked out of his depth with some erratic performances, Things improved in 2006 as he made some useful contributions in the C & G trophy, but still struggled to keep his economy rate low. He has shown potential in the seconds, however, ending with 46 wickets at an average of 25, and was Surrey's top wicket taker at that level. Dernbach has also spent time in Australia, playing grade cricket in Sydney for Randwick/Petersham. In 2005 he won the Jack Hobbs Fair Play award.
