Profile

Stoke Down was briefly the home of the Hambledon club, the first match taking place there in May 1778 with the first major game in July of that year when Hampshire played All England. In 1782 Hambledon moved to Windmill Down and while they continued to use Stoke Down occasionally, its importance declined. It staged cricket into the 19th century but was not used for major games. In the late 18th century it was also the home for Arlesford Cricket Club, one of the most important sides in the land.
