David Shepherd 1940-2009
October 28, 2009
A pugnacious middle-order batsman, David Shepherd smashed a century on his county debut for Gloucestershire
He made his first-class umpiring debut in 1981, and his Test debut in the 1985 Ashes
He was possibly best known for his aversion to the dreaded Nelson - and never failed to put on the "hop" stance when required
Instantly recognisable, he endeared himself to players with his sense of humour and gentle approach.
He could be tough when the situation demanded, intervening here to stop an argument between Steve Waugh and Brian Lara in 2003...
...and warning Waqar Younis after bowling two beamers in a 2003 World Cup game
He stood in 92 Tests and in three successive World Cup finals - 1996, 1999 and 2003
His physique was no handicap to the increasing demands of top-level international umpiring
Shepherd bowed out of international cricket with the third match of the NatWest Challenge between Australia and England
He fittingly ended his umpiring career at Bristol
