Marcus Trescothick has doused any thoughts of an international comeback, once again saying that there is no way he can return to the top level after he was forced into early retirement by a stress-related illness.

With Kevin Pietersen working his magic on Steve Harmison, who came out of ODI retirement to face South Africa and is now in line for the Stanford games in Antigua, there has been a suggestion that Pietersen has been trying to change Trescothick's mind. However, while Trescothick says they have been in contact his decision is made and he is putting his health and family first.

"There have been a few jokey text messages," Trescothick told Test Match Special, "but nothing too serious."

Part of the reason why the potential for a Trescothick comeback is making the headlines again - apart from his autobiography being released this week - has been his recent form for Somerset. He has produced a series of blistering innings, including 183 in the Pro40 against Gloucestershire, but said that playing county cricket is now his limit.

"It was the playing away in the winter," he said. "I got to the airport and I just couldn't carry on. It was definitely a no no. In county cricket you know it's matter of getting into a car to get home. If I was playing a game today here I am confident that I could play, but I can't sustain it on winter tours."

Pietersen has said that Trescothick could be the one final piece to England's one-day resurgence, but admits that it is a very different situation from the one faced by Harmison.

"To get Tres back in the team would be massive," he said. "It would be great - I just feel sorry for the county bowlers who he is smashing at the moment - but he is a man on his own and he's got his reasons. He's made his decision and that's it."
