Jonathan Trott has earned a one-day international recall as a replacement for the injured Kevin Pietersen while Graeme Swann has been rested, allowing James Tredwell to come into the squad for the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh that begins July 8.
Trott was left out of England's one-day squad after their tour to South Africa last year but has been in good limited-overs form for Warwickshire this season and scored a century in England Lions' victory against West Indies A last month. His chance comes because Pietersen suffered a quad strain during the 42-run defeat to Australia in the final ODI at Lord's and will now undergo a rehabilitation period. National selector Geoff Miller feels the though the injury of no great concern England are erring on the side of caution.
"I think it is a minor injury," said Miller. "But we are obviously wary, because there is a lot of cricket coming up over the rest of the summer and the winter as well. I am sure he will be all right [for the forthcoming npower Test series against Pakistan] but can't say that categorically at this stage. I think it is a slight one as opposed to a major one. We are just being cautious. I think he will be all right in the very near future."
Though the injury provides a welcome return for Trott, who was once inked in in all formats for England, he is likely to start the series on the sidelines with Ian Bell slotting into Pietersen's No. 3 spot.
Tredwell's inclusion comes because Swann, who has been an ever-present in all formats for England over the past 12 months, has been given a period out to rest. He will, however, be free to play Championship cricket for Nottinghamshire.
"Graeme Swann has been involved in all forms of the game for some time now and this forthcoming period has been identified as the best opportunity to ensure Graeme has a suitable break ahead of a demanding schedule this summer and during the winter," said Miller.
Tredwell made his Test and ODI debut against Bangladesh in March but was leap-frogged by Michael Yardy into the side against Australia, with the view that he and Swann were too similar in styles.
"James Tredwell and Jonathan Trott have previously been involved with the England One-Day set up and will be excellent additions to the full England squad from the England Lions. Both have been in good form for the Lions and will relish the opportunity to make their mark in limited overs at the top level."
The only other change from the squad selected for the series against Australia is Ajmal Shahzad's inclusion ahead of Ryan Sidebottom. Shahzad impressed with pace and reverse-swing on Test debut against Bangladesh last month and has also been England Lions' best fast bowler in the recent games against West Indies A and India A. The England selectors may view this as another opportunity to give him full international experience, having already established Sidebottom's credentials.
