John Abrahams came to England with his father, Cec, who played for years in the Lancashire Leagues. Small, athletic and a capable batsman, he made his maiden hundred for Lancashire in the Roses match in 1977 but did not pass 1000 runs for the first of four times until 1982, a decade after making his debut.

He was, nevertheless, a surprise choice to lead the side when Clive Lloyd stood down in 1984 given that the county boasted several internationals, but in his first year he led them to victory in the Benson & Hedges Cup final, being awarded the Man-of-the-Match award for his leadership alone - he made 0. He proved a good captain and popular captain but was replaced after two years.

After retiring he played for Shropshire and then moved into coaching.
