| Galle International Stadium re-opened after its tsunami reconstruction in Dec 2007 |
The National Development Centre (NDC) is in charge of development activities. It ensures that infrastructure facilities are carried out across the country in a bid to improve the standard of cricket, particularly in the outstations.
The NDC has identified several provincial towns to construct new cricket grounds. Anuradhapura (North Central), Hambantota (Southern), Matale (Central) and Monaragala (Uva) will soon have brand new cricket grounds.
Meanwhile, reconstruction work is carried out in major grounds whenever necessary. The Galle International Cricket Stadium, which was devastated by the tsunami in December 2004, was completely refurbished in time for the England tour in Dec 2007. Welagedara Stadium in Kurunegala is getting a facelift similar to Test venues.
The NDC helps cricket clubs to improve their infrastructure facilities. Club houses are redone, sprinkler systems are installed, sight screens are provided, score boards are built, and drainage systems are improved.
Indoor nets, pitch covers and astro turfs are provided to clubs with a view to improving the standard of the game. Bowling machines and gym equipment are given to selected clubs.
Cricket materials are regularly distributed among clubs and schools. |
