Training
SLC Cricket Academy conducts comprehensive training programmes for young cricketers regularly. A squad of 20 players is constantly in training. They are trained over a period of seven to eight months and they form the Development Squad.
To develop cricket skills, trainees practice at the nets as well as one to one basis. These cover batting, bowling and fielding. Equipment such as bowling machines is used. Video analyzing helps them to identify their strengths and weaknesses. Game sense discussions form part of the skills training.
The trainees also undergo physical training, pool training and training in the gym.
The Development Squad undertakes overseas tours. During their last tour to India, they won the Maharashtra Challenge Trophy.
Jerome Jayaratne functions as Head Coach of the Academy and looks after training in batting . He is assisted by Anusha Samarasekera (fast bowling), Piyal Wijestunga (spin bowling) and Manoj Abeywickrema (fielding).
The performance of the Development Squad players are constantly monitored and reviewed by the national selectors who pick on the best performers for the Sri Lanka 'A' team. One of them – Ajantha Mendis (Army) was picked directly to the national team for the tour to the West Indies (March/April 2008). |
