4th Test: England v Australia at Trent Bridge, 25-29 Aug 2005

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Day 1 start scheduled for 10.30am Local Time (09.30 GMT)

Hello and welcome to the start of the fourth Ashes Test
I'm Anand Vasu, and will be your commentator for this game. It has
been tremendously enjoyable calling the action for the first three
Tests and one can only hope this turns out to be a cracker as well
Let's cut to the chase and give you all the news as it has come in
England have won the toss and chosen to bat
But the news for Austgralia is not so good. Glenn McGrath has been
ruled out and Michael Kasprowicz takes his place
Jason Gillespie, who has struggled for form all summer has been
left out, and Shaun Tait, the young tearaway from South Australia
        gets his Test debut
The weather forecasts have been a bit iffy for the next few days
There's rain in the area and we expect interruptions in the form of
        showers
With the series standing at 1-1 there's everything to play for
here. The Ashes could well be decided on how the day's play goes
There's been plenty of excitement surrounding Shaun Tait, who is
reputed to regularly clock in excess of 90 mph
The players are all on the field now and onm place
       The umpire calls "Play!"
Here we go, it's Lee to Trescothick
0.1 Lee to Trescothick, no run, just short of a good length and outside
the off, good poace and carry, left well alone to the keeper
0.2 Lee to Trescothick, no run, straighter this time, on the stumps,
Trecothick fends the ball away to the leg side with ease
0.3 Lee to Trescothick, no run, fuller length this time and outside the
off, the ball does not swing at all and just slants away with the
        angle, left alone once more
0.4 Lee to Trescothick, no run, this one is closer to the off stump and
Trescothick drops it down to the off side with soft hands and an
angled bat and thinks about a single but Michael Clarke comes
        screaming in and fields
0.5 Lee to Trescothick, no run, once again just short of a good length
and outside the off, Lee has been pretty much on target so far and
you need to be just that on this good batting pitch, left alone
0.6 Lee to Trescothick, no run, Lee is a bit warmed up now and puts
mopre effort into this one, grunting as he lets a short one go,
Trescothick sways out of the way

End of over 1 (maiden) England 0/0
B Lee 1-1-0-0 - Radcliffe Road End
AJ Strauss 0* (0b) ME Trescothick 0* (6b)

Lee has begun well with a maiden
Kasprowicz to share the new ball
1.1 Kasprowicz to Strauss, one run, just short of a length and outside
the off, angled down past the gully fielder for England's first
        run of the fourth Test
1.2 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, just short of a length and
slanting away from the left-handed Trescothick who defends
        watchfully, playing the ball late
1.3 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, played away to the leg side,
Kasprowicz is also bang on target first up
1.4 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, this one is just short of a
length and there's a hint of away movement after the ball pitches,
        clipped to the leg side
1.5 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, once again on middle and leg,
Trescothick shapes to play the ball to the leg side and the ball
goes off the edge towards the off side
1.6 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, fullish and on the off, angled
down to gully but there's no chance of a run

End of over 2 (1 run) England 1/0
MS Kasprowicz 1-0-1-0 - Pavilion End
AJ Strauss 1* (1b) ME Trescothick 0* (11b)

2.1 Lee to Strauss, no run, just short of a good length and on the off,
this is definitely Lee's length, at 92.1 mph Strauss wisely
        defends back down the pitch
2.2 Lee to Strauss, three runs, a bit too straight, Strauss has no
trouble picking the ball off his hips and clipping the through
        square-leg
2.3 Lee to Trescothick, (noball) no run, better line and length this
time and played back down the pitch, and that is the first no-ball
        of this game
2.3 Lee to Trescothick, no run, pushed through slightly fuller outside
the off but not quite a half-volley, Trescothick shows the full
face of the bat and punches back down the pitch
2.4 Lee to Trescothick, no run, a bit of extra pace on that one,
Trescothick hangs the bat limply outside the off but is well and
truly beaten as the ball hastens to the keeper
2.5 Lee to Trescothick, no run, full once again and worked back down
the pitch somewhat awkwardly, but safely enough
2.6 Lee to Trescothick, (noball) no run, good length ball outside the
off, perfect in every way other than that Lee has overstepped the
popping crease and it's yet another no-ball. We've seen a bit of
this from all bowlers in this series
2.6 Lee to Trescothick, no run, this time it is a legitimate delivery
outside the off, left alone to end another decent over from Lee

End of over 3 (5 runs) England 6/0
B Lee 2-1-5-0 (2nb) - Radcliffe Road End
AJ Strauss 4* (3b) ME Trescothick 0* (17b)

3.1 Kasprowicz to Strauss, (noball) no run, full and outside the off,
Kasprowicz straining for some swing early on, but only manages a
        no-ball
3.1 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run, a bit of extra bounce from
Kasprowicz as the ball leps off a length, Strauss adjusts well
enough to keep the ball down towards gully
3.2 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run, just short of a good length and
outside the off, left well alone to the keeper
3.3 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run, once again an immaculate line and
length, just short of driving length and a touch outside the off,
        watchfully left alone
3.4 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run, just short of a good length and
outside the off yet again - Kasprowicz bowling beautifully to the
        left-handed batsmen - left alone
3.5 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run, slightly straighter this time and
the ball is defended to the leg side, but there's no chance of a
        run
3.6 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run, played down towards gully to end an
        immaculate over from Kasprowicz

End of over 4 (1 run) England 7/0
MS Kasprowicz 2-0-2-0 (1nb) - Pavilion End
ME Trescothick 0* (17b) AJ Strauss 4* (10b)

4.1 Lee to Trescothick, no run, just short of a good length and outside
the off, gun-barrel straight, though, no seam or swing movement,
        played down to point
4.2 Lee to Trescothick, no run, just short of a good length and outside
the off, played down to gully
4.3 Lee to Trescothick, no run, driven down towards point where Michael
Clarke, who seems to have recovered completely from that back
        problem, swoops in and fields
4.4 Lee to Trescothick, FOUR, too straight from Lee this time,
Trescothick does not even need to move his feet as he clips the
ball through square-leg for the first boundary of the day
4.5 Lee to Trescothick, (noball) no run, just short of a good length
and outside the off, now you need to move your feet to play cut
shots like the pone Trescothick attempts and misses. In the end it
does not matter as it is another no-ball
4.5 Lee to Trescothick, no run, just short of a good length and on the
stumps, Trescothick defends away from the body a little and gets
an edge back on to the pad
4.6 Lee to Trescothick, no run, back of a length and on the off, played
        down carefully

End of over 5 (5 runs) England 12/0
B Lee 3-1-10-0 (3nb) - Radcliffe Road End
AJ Strauss 4* (10b) ME Trescothick 4* (24b 1x4)

5.1 Kasprowicz to Strauss, (noball) no run, just short of a good length
and threatening to move away, it's another great ball, but
        ironically another no-ball
5.1 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run, slightly fuller this time and this
gives Strauss the chance to drive. Drive he does but straight to
        the man at mid-off
5.2 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run, .;just short of a length and on the
pads, defended to the leg sidew
5.3 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run, left alone to the keeper once more
as Kasprowicz keeps up a teasing line and length
5.4 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run, this one is played forcefully
through the leg side but Shaun Tait, the big man, gets down
        quickly and fields
5.5 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run, slightly fuller and angling
beautifully away from the left-handed Strauss, left alone to the
        keeper
5.6 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run, back of a length and on the pads,
        turned to the on side

End of over 6 (1 run) England 13/0
MS Kasprowicz 3-0-3-0 (2nb) - Pavilion End
ME Trescothick 4* (24b 1x4) AJ Strauss 4* (17b)

6.1 Lee to Trescothick, no run, back of a length and outside the off,
this one is left alone but interestingly the ball does not quite
carry to Gilchrist with any real pace or bounce
6.2 Lee to Trescothick, no run, just short of a good length and on the
stumps, defended to the leg side
6.3 Lee to Trescothick, no run, short of a good length and on the off,
        punched to cover
6.4 Lee to Trescothick, one run, And one more to Trescothick as he
picks this one off through the leg side, just behind square
6.5 Lee to Strauss, FOUR, just too straight once more from Lee and
Strauss tickles it away fine. This was a slower ball that went
wrong, but still had enough paceto run away to the fine-leg fence
6.6 Lee to Strauss, no run, quick one just outside the off to end the
over as Strauss leaves the ball weell alone

End of over 7 (5 runs) England 18/0
B Lee 4-1-15-0 (3nb) - Radcliffe Road End
ME Trescothick 5* (28b 1x4) AJ Strauss 8* (19b 1x4)

7.1 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, just short of a good length and
on the off, Kasprowicz doing a McGrath in terms of accuracy here,
        defended to the off side
7.2 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, three runs, the commentator's curse
strikes! Kasprowicz's radar goes awry and this one is on the pads,
flicked well through midwicket but it won't go all the way
7.3 Kasprowicz to Strauss, (noball) FOUR, short and on the stumps,
Strauss sees that one very early and says thank you very much
before smashing the ball over midwicket with a fine pull stroke
7.3 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run, normal service resumes in terms of
line and length, played down to point
7.4 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run, just short of a good length and
outside the off, left alone to the keeper
7.5 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run, fuller this time and on the off,
        driven to mid-off
7.6 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run

End of over 8 (8 runs) England 26/0
MS Kasprowicz 4-0-11-0 (3nb) - Pavilion End
ME Trescothick 8* (30b 1x4) AJ Strauss 12* (24b 2x4)

8.1 Lee to Trescothick, one run, just short of a good length and on the
pads, clipped through square-leg for a single
8.2 Lee to Strauss, no run, a bit of pace and bounce here, Strauss
leaves that alone on length and the ball sails over the stumps
8.3 Lee to Strauss, no run, slightly fullish this time and outside the
off, Strauss leaves this one well alone and there is just the
slightest hint of swing after the ball passes the batsman
8.4 Lee to Strauss, no run, just short of a good length and outside the
off stump, Strauss follows the ball carefully and tucks the bat
        inside the line
8.5 Lee to Strauss, no run, short of a good length and just outside the
off, Strauss drops his wrists and sways inside the line of the
ball, allowing it to pass to Gilchrist
8.6 Lee to Strauss, no run, slightly fuller this time but it is a bit
too wide for Strauss to seriously consider having a go. Left alone
        to the keeper

End of over 9 (1 run) England 27/0
B Lee 5-1-16-0 (3nb) - Radcliffe Road End
ME Trescothick 9* (31b 1x4) AJ Strauss 12* (29b 2x4)

9.1 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, two runs, on the pads this time and
Trescothick is happy to flick the ball away towards fine-leg for a
        brace
9.2 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, fuller this time and outside the
off, this is where Kasprowicz needs to bowl to the left-handers,
        left alone to the keeper
9.3 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, one run, pushed wide of the fielder at
        cover for a quick single
9.4 Kasprowicz to Strauss, no run, dragged back a touch shorter but the
line is excellent and all Strauss can do is follow the ball and
let it pass harmlessly to the keeper
9.5 Kasprowicz to Strauss, one run, on the pads this time and the ball
is clipped away through midwicket for a single
9.6 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, FOUR, again that teasing perfect line
and length, Trescothick plays away from the body with an angled
bat and the ball goes off the inside edge, just misses the stumps
and runs down to fine-leg for four

End of over 10 (8 runs) England 35/0
MS Kasprowicz 5-0-19-0 (3nb) - Pavilion End
AJ Strauss 13* (31b 2x4) ME Trescothick 16* (35b 2x4)

And here's the moment people have been waiting for. Here comes
        Shaun Tait
10.1 Tait to Strauss, no run, fullish and outside the off, that is a bit
of a loosener and not much pace on it, left alone to the keeper
10.2 Tait to Strauss, no run, slightly closer to the stumps, just short
of a good length, through to the keeper
10.3 Tait to Strauss, no run, short one banged in, that's 93.5 mph, hard
work on this largely paceless pitch, left alone to the keeper
10.4 Tait to Strauss, no run, this time pushed through quicker and
fuller, just a hint of inswing, defended to the off side
10.5 Tait to Strauss, two runs, short ball once more and Strauss goes
for the pull, does not quite get hold of it, two runs result
        anyway
10.6 Tait to Strauss, no run, pushed through very full and outside the
        off, left alone

End of over 11 (2 runs) England 37/0
SW Tait 1-0-2-0 - Radcliffe Road End
ME Trescothick 16* (35b 2x4) AJ Strauss 15* (37b 2x4)

Tait, for those of you who have not seen him, has a nice slingy
action that suggests he will be able to reverse the ball. Good
        pace, a nice smooth run-up and a short follow-through.
11.1 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, just short of a good length and
outside the off, left alone to the keeper
11.2 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, full and on the off, defended
        towards point with soft hands
11.3 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, full and on the off this time
and Trescothick waits on the ball, angles his bat and sends the
        ball towards gully
11.4 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, just short of a good length and
outside the off, played to gully once more and there's no chance
        of a single
11.5 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, driven well but Michael Clarke
does not let too much get past him at point, good scrambling stop
11.6 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, fullish and outside the off, end
of a tidy maiden over from Kasprowicz

End of over 12 (maiden) England 37/0
MS Kasprowicz 6-1-19-0 (3nb) - Pavilion End
AJ Strauss 15* (37b 2x4) ME Trescothick 16* (41b 2x4)

12.1 Tait to Strauss, one run, just short of a good length and outside
        the off, eased through cover
12.2 Tait to Trescothick, FOUR, short of a good length and outside the
off, Trescothick slants his bat and guides the ball past gully

off, Trescothick squeezes the ball backward of point for another
        boundary
12.4 Tait to Trescothick, no run, just short of a good length and
outside the off, cut down towards gully
12.5 Tait to Trescothick, one run, on the pads this time and worked away
easily through the leg side for a single

on the off, defended down towards point

length and on the stumps, this time defended down towards gully
        with an angled bat

the pads, played at and missed, off the pad, no-ball yet again

to the left-handed Trescothick, defended back down the pitch

outside the off, the ball is angling in and then holding its line
after pitching, left alone to the keeper

Trescothick drives uppishly but wide of the man at point to bring

Welcome back to our coverage of the first day's play of the fourth
        Ashes Test at Trent Bridge
The news isn't great at the moment. As we had suggested before the
start of play, there is a bit of rain aroun.
A heavy shower during the lunch break has meant that the covers are
        on
Fortunately the groundstaff were alert to the possibility and had
the covers on before the raingot heavy
They are now working hard to get the field of play ready
We're unable to tell you exactly when that will be, but can assure
you that you won't miss a ball of the action if you stay with
        Cricinfo.
We'll be right here, monitoring the situation closely and updating
you with the news as and when there is some

Match State: Delay - Day 1 - Rain stopped play

UPDATE [1237 GMT] It's still raining and the covers are on. Will
let you know when the situation improves.
UPDATE [1255 GMT] There's fresh news and it is good. Play will
begin in about 20 minutes, at 1310 GMT (1410 local time) and also
the tea interval has been pushed back to 1440 GMT.
So there we have it, play starting soon. We'll bnring you all the
live action as and when it gets under way
players are back in the middle, it will be Kasprowicz to
        Trescothick
27.1 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, good length delivery close to
the off stump line, Trescothick carefully leaves it for the keeper
two slips and a gully in place
27.2 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, (noball) no run, the ghost is still
around, Kasprowicz oversteps, on the middle and off stump line,

close to the off stump line, no shot offered

It will be Tait from the Radcliffe Road End
28.1 Tait to Vaughan, no run, just a hint of swing, the ball curves away
from Michael Vaughan as he sees that it is on a good length and
outside the off and leaves it alone
28.2 Tait to Vaughan, no run, again full and outside the off,, this one
swings away appreciably, Vaughan drives and misses, now Ponting
will get a second slip in place
28.3 Tait to Vaughan, no run, another one outside the off that is
shaping away, suddenly there is some movement in the air after
lunch, this will encourage Tait, left alone outside the off
28.4 Tait to Vaughan, no run, overpitched and on the off, a full-toss
        even, driven to mid-off
28.5 Tait to Vaughan, no run, another quick one, good length, on the
off, Vaughan comes forward and across and defends well
28.6 Tait to Vaughan, no run, just short of a good length and outside

There's definitely some swing in the air for the bowlers after
lunch. This is a good sign for Australia's quick men who toiled
hard without much reward in the first session
29.1 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, short of a good length and

played down towards cover with soft hands, quick single stolen
29.4 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, just short of a driving length
and outside the off, a hint of away swing, left alone to the
        keeper
29.5 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, just short of a length again and
on the off, defended towards cover with an angled bat
29.6 Kasprowicz to Trescothick, no run, fullish and on the off, driven
        well but straight to mid-off

Now the rains have begun to come down again and the plays rush off
even as the groundstaff charge in with the covers
It's quite cloudy and there is a bit of rain in the area
There you have it, another break because of rain
It does appear as though it is going to be one of those days when
the players are frequently on and off the field

Match State: Delay - Day 1 - Rain stopped play

UPDATE [1325 GMT] Rain has stopped play for the second time in the
day. We will be back with all the live action as and when it
        happens.
UPDATE [1405 GMT] The news is that tea will be taken shortly and
that play will resume at 1430 GMT if there is no further rain. Be
        sure to join us then.
Welcome back to Trent Bridge. Tjhe most unusual things just
        happened.
Play was about to get under way. Steve Bucknor walked out on to the
field, and immediately the rain began again.
So the news, I'm afraid, is that it is still raining at Trent
        Bridge.
Update [1430 GMT] Still raining. Covers are on. When there is
further news we will keep you posted.
